Insolvencies loom large, according to the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) recent report into the global economy. As governments ease their financial support for businesses, we are already seeing redundancies across a number of sectors, including retail, travel, hospitality, entertainment and manufacturing. With so many businesses grinding to a halt over the past few months and now looking to re-ignite interest in a difficult economy, they could be forgiven for trying to re-imagine how they operate and how, in the immediate future, they will survive, let alone grow.

Understandably, interest in robotics is growing, as advances in robotics and robotic process automation (RPA) technologies accelerate. Manufacturing, in particular the motor industry, has traditionally been a leading sector for robotics but now interest is spreading across industries and that includes some unusual applications. The ICE+FRIES bar in Iceland’s capital Reykjavik, for example, with its robot cocktail maker Toni, the robotic restaurant start-up Karakuri, or Spot the robot dog from Boston Dynamics, that patrolled Singapore’s Bishan-Ang Moh Kio Park back in May, reminding people to maintain social distancing. All illustrate the increasing breadth of automated technology but for most organisations, robotics will drive the more mundane.

According to Dr. Leslie Willcocks, Professor of Work, Technology, and Globalisation at the London School of Economics Department of Management, while most businesses want to harness automation for resilience, speed, lower costs and keeping up with market demands, the reality is somewhat different.

“In our latest research, some 65 percent are focusing on making outlays only on lower end Robotic Process Automation to get cheap quick wins necessary to either sweat the assets, or underpin today’s business performance,” he says. “Some 20 percent are continuing to make investments following a long-term strategy but at a slower rate, while only 15 percent are fully on board with investing in advanced automation as part of a larger digital transformation.”

Unsurprisingly perhaps, Willcocks adds that “health sectors everywhere are finding quite a lot of use for automation because of increased pressure on resources.” The same of course could be said for logistics businesses. It’s the repetitive, everyday tasks that now have to be performed at a safe distance that are starting to be partially automated, primarily through the use of teleoperation, at least according to Dr Antonio Espingardeiro, senior member of the IEEE. He suggests that these tasks are ranging from “collecting and transporting hospital garbage or even constantly patrolling corridors for spraying disinfection materials.”

Source – fool.com

Artificial intelligence (AI) is getting a lot of attention from investors these days and with good reason. It’s a technology with the potential to transform everything from transportation to cloud computing.

Many companies are betting that AI will influence not just their products and services, but nearly every aspect of their business. Read on to discover nine things you may not have to know about this burgeoning technology.

1. AI encompasses many different types of computer learning.

Artificial intelligence is often used as a catch-all to describe computer systems that can learn. But there are more specific designations like machine learning, deep learning, and deep inference that describe the details of how those computers are learning. For example, the GPU chipmaker NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) defines machine learning as “the practice of using algorithms to parse data, learn from it, and then make a determination or prediction about something in the world.”

2. The artificial intelligence market will be worth a lot. Like, really a lot.

A PwC report estimates that AI will contribute $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030. AI will make products and services better, and it’s expected to boost North America’s GDP by 14% by that year.

3. The $127 billion autonomous vehicle market is being driven by AI.

That’s how much the self-driving car market is expected to be worth worldwide by 2027 — and AI technology is crucial for making them a reality. NVIDIA created its own computer — the Drive PX Pegasus — specifically for driverless cars and powered by the company’s AI and GPUs. It starts shipping this year, and 25 automakers and tech companies have already placed orders.

4. AI is already making the connected home much better.

Amazon.com‘s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Echo line, powered by its AI personal assistant, Alexa, holds 70% of the smart speaker market right now and could add $10 billion the company’s top line by 2020. Additionally, Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is using its own AI, called Google Assistant, to power its own competing line, and the smart speaker rivalry is only going to grow.

5. Some products you buy are being suggested to you by artificial intelligence.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos told investors last year that the company’s machine learning systems are being used to recommend products to customers on its e-commerce platform. Beyond that, AI help’s it determine which deals to offer and when, and influences many aspects of the business. Bezos recommended that investors watch this space.

6. The AI processor battle has already begun.

Alphabet has created its own artificial intelligence processor, called the Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), specifically designed to make its advertising, search, Gmail, Google Photos, and other services smarter. The tech giant is also using the TPUs to enhance its cloud computing serverswith the goal of grabbing a bigger piece of that $411 billion market.

7. Some tech leaders are legitimately worried about AI.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) CEO Elon Musk — who’s no stranger to advanced technology — has warned on multiple occasions that artificial intelligence could eventually be dangerous to people — and to humanity as a whole. He recommends some regulation around the technology and specifically wants a ban on any type of autonomous weaponry. Considering the fact that some governments are already working on AI controlled weapons, his request sounds reasonable.

8. World-famous physicist Stephen Hawking thinks AI will make a lot of jobs disappear.

Hawking is one of many deep thinkers who believe AI systems will eliminate many jobs, and not create enough to replace them. Specifically, he said, “The automation of factories has already decimated jobs in traditional manufacturing, and the rise of artificial intelligence is likely to extend this job destruction deep into the middle classes, with only the most caring, creative or supervisory roles remaining.” He’s far from alone in his views. PwC says that 38% of U.S. jobs will be vulnerable to AI over the next 15 years.

9. Humans are smarter than any type of AI — for now.

Some researchers expect artificial intelligence systems to be only one-tenth as smart as a human by 2035. But things may start to get a little awkward around 2060 when AI could start performing nearly all the tasks humans do — and doing them much better.

Bonus thoughts

Artificial intelligence has so much potential across so many different industries, it can be hard for an investor looking to profit from it to know where to start. As a first step, check out these AI stocks you don’t have to babysit. Just don’t forget to take the long view when it comes to any AI investments. Companies like NVIDIA and Amazon may be benefiting from the technology right now, but it may take a while for others to reap the benefits from their early AI investments — so be patient.

10 stocks we like better than Nvidia
When investing geniuses David and Tom Gardner have a stock tip, it can pay to listen. After all, the newsletter they have run for over a decade, Motley Fool Stock Advisor, has tripled the market.*

David and Tom just revealed what they believe are the ten best stocks for investors to buy right now… and Nvidia wasn’t one of them! That’s right — they think these 10 stocks are even better buys.

Source – money.cnn.com

The three countries are leading an artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, Malcolm Frank, head of strategy at leading outsourcing firm Cognizant, told CNNMoney in an interview.

Frank is the co-author of a recent book entitled “What to Do When Machines Do Everything,” on the impact artificial intelligence will have on the global economy in the coming years.

“I think it’s three horses in the race, and that’s probably the wrong metaphor because they are all going to win,” he said. “They are just going to win differently.”

While AI is progressing quickly elsewhere too, Frank said the other development hotspots are mainly city hubs such as London and Stockholm, or far smaller economies such as Estonia.

“The big three [are] India, China and the U.S,” he said.

Here’s why:

America

Silicon Valley giants such as Facebook (FB, Tech30), Amazon (AMZN, Tech30), Google (GOOGL, Tech30) and Tesla (TSLA) are already investing billions in harnessing the power of computers to replace several human tasks.

Computers are already beginning to substitute for people in sectors such as agriculture and even medicine, not to mention the race to get driverless cars on the road.

“With Silicon Valley, and the vendors and momentum that exists there… that’s going to continue,” Frank said.

China

The world’s second largest economy is also betting big on artificial intelligence.

Tech companies including Tencent (TCEHY) and Baidu (BIDU, Tech30) are competing with Silicon Valley to develop new uses for AI, and tech billionaire Jack Ma of Alibaba (BABA, Tech30), one of China’s richest men, has even said CEOs may eventually be obsolete.

Unlike in the U.S., however, the biggest push towards this new world in China is coming from the government.

“You look at the playbook China has had very successfully, with state sponsorship around developing the [physical] infrastructure of the country,” Frank said. “They’re taking a very similar approach around artificial intelligence, and I think that’s going to yield a lot of benefit.”

The Chinese government has already laid out an ambitious plan for a $150 billion AI industry, saying last month that it wants China to become the world’s “innovation center for AI” by 2030.

India

In India, the main shift towards artificial intelligence is coming from companies that make up its$143 billion outsourcing industry — a sector that employs nearly 4 million people.

Top firms like Infosys (INFY), Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro (WIT), which provide technology services to big names including Deutsche Bank (DB), Lockheed Martin (LMT), IBM(IBM, Tech30), Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) and the U.S. Army, are increasingly relying on automation in their operations.

“In India, you look at this remarkable platform that is in place now… of incredibly sophisticated skills that are focused on the needs of [global] companies,” said Frank.

In addition, India’s startup scene also makes him “very optimistic” about the future of artificial intelligence there.

Cognizant (CTSH), which is based in the U.S. but has most of its workforce in India, is also making ever greater use of AI — from online bots managing clients’ finances to helping create automated systems for smart devices.

Should we be worried?

Many are worried about the potential pitfalls of artificial intelligence, including Tesla’s billionaire founder Elon Musk. He has warned that the technology could pose “an existential threat” if not used properly, and published a letter this week with over 100 other industry experts demanding a global ban on using it to make weapons.

Frank said that the development of artificial intelligence requires careful thought, by governments and companies working together to establish ground rules. The tech executive compared it to safety regulations for air travel and for cars, which have evolved several times over the years.

The focus needs to be on creating a world “where AI is going to be safe and you get the benefits of it without the downsides,” he said.

As for the other pervasive fear — that more robots will lead to job losses — Frank argues that AI will not only create more and different kinds of jobs in the future, but also enhance many of the existing ones.

“That’s what happened with assembly lines, that’s what happened with the steam engine, that’s what we think is going to happen with artificial intelligence.”
