Hyderabad: Emerging and in-demand areas of learning at engineering level have started to take over from the traditionally popular courses such as Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), Mechanical Engineering and Civil engineering.

Course such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and Data Science have started to take precedence which can be seen from private engineering colleges wanting to shift to them while ceding some seats in other regular courses.

For the academic year 2020-2021, around 120 private engineering colleges have applied to the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad (JNTU-H) seeking conversion of nearly 20,000 seats in EEE, Mechanical and Civil engineering courses into programmes in emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, IoT and Data Science.

This year, JNTU-H has approved introduction of six new programmes in emerging technologies including Computer Engineering-Software Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering-Cyber Security, Computer Science and Engineering-Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Computer Science and Engineering-Data Science, Computer Science and Engineering-Internet of Things and Computer Science and Engineering-Networks.

According to the JNTU-H authorities, of late EEE, Mechanical and Civil engineering courses have been witnessing lesser demand from the students with colleges having a tough time in filling the seats. “Private engineering colleges which have excess number of seats in EEE, Mechanical and Civil engineering courses are seeking seat conversion into emerging technologies. The colleges are not closing the courses but reducing intake. We particularly got applications for conversion of seats to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Data Science and Internet of Things,” a senior official said.

The university will take a call on converting the seats once the colleges meet required norms including availability of faculty, laboratories and infrastructure for teaching new courses.

Meanwhile, in view of the Covid-19 pandemic, JNTU-H is exploring various options for granting affiliation to private engineering colleges for the academic year 2020-21. Every year, experts from the varsity inspect the colleges before granting affiliation. In view of the prevailing conditions due to coronavirus, this norm is being relooked into.

“We are looking into the guidelines of the University Grants Commission, All India Council for Technical Education and other State universities for granting affiliations to the private engineering colleges. A decision will be taken in a week,” the official said.

Hyderabad: Students who wish to pursue undergraduate engineering degrees will have ample options in emerging and cutting-edge technologies this year. With varied technologies coming up, new programmes emerged in tune with the market requirements.

This time, the engineering colleges in State have decided to offer a bouquet of courses including Computer Engineering (Software Engineering), Computer Science and Engineering (Cyber Security), Computer Science and Engineering (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning), Computer Science and Engineering (Data Science), Computer Science and Engineering (Internet of Things) and Computer Science and Engineering (Networks).

Earlier these areas were taught as part of an engineering course. But with huge demand in the market and from students, these programmes will be offered as the specialised one from this year.

At least 150 private engineering colleges affiliated to the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad have come forward to teach these specialised courses. In fact, the college management also made an application to the varsity seeking permission.

On approval by the university authorities, at least 2,000 seats in these courses will be up for the grabs in engineering admission counselling through the Engineering, Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET).

Apart from private engineering colleges, the newly established private universities too have decided to offer courses in emerging technologies at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels from this year.

The Woxsen University, a private varsity said it will bring some of the most disruptive postgraduate and undergraduate programmes in emerging technologies like Data Sciences, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Robotics.

“Woxsen has already invested in setting up a state-of-the-art AI and Robotics lab to provide simulated case studies and live project to make the students industry ready,” the Woxsen said.

The conventional universities are also ready to launch two new undergraduate programmes i.e. BSc in Data Science and BCom in Business Analytics programmes this year. The courses have been designed keeping in view of the market requirements.

The BSc Data Science programme will be offered in a combination i.e. Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science. Those students who have passed intermediate with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry subjects are likely to be given eligibility. The admission to two new courses will be through the Degree Online Services, Telangana and it will be done on the basis of the merit secured in the intermediate.

A Centre for Research in Applied Artificial Intelligence (CRiAA), a R&D Park, a Centre of Excellence and other facilities in Artificial Intelligence (AI) will come up in Hyderabad as the Telangana government on Thursday signed eight memoranda of understanding with various companies and institutions.

The state signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Intel, International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Hyderabad and Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) for the CRiAA, which will focus on diagnostics, proactive public health, health services optimisation, evidence based social strategy and policy, treatment protocols discovery and smart mobility, advanced safety, autonomous navigation, traffic management and smart cities and other areas.

It was one of the MoUs inked at an event organised here to declare 2020 as the year of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Under another MoU, the NVIDIA will partner with the state government to setup a High Performance AI Computing (HPAIC) Centre. They will also assist in startup incubation, and host AI training sessions to support women and minority groups, officials said.

The state in association with IIT Kharagpur, has decided to launch a R&D Park and an AI-CoE, with applications in advanced manufacturing, life-sciences and aerospace and defence.

An MoU was signed with the Applied Cluster of AI, Norway, to design student and faculty exchange programme with the premier universities of Norway, and soft landing programmes for Hyderabad startups to get access to Scandinavian markets.

Another MoU with signed with Wadhwani AI under which it will deploy AI solutions for the benefit of expecting mothers and newborn babies. WAI solution will also be used for agriculture. It will also advise Telangana on using AI to solve complex social development challenges

Adobe Systems will help the state in capacity building. It will work to enhance digital literacy and foster creativity skills of youth

Information Technology Minister K. T. Rama Rao said the state’s primary goals were to attract and enable over 200 AI innovators and start-ups to build their base in Hyderabad, educate and attract top AI talent from across the globe to work on critical areas as determined by the industry and government. “Another goal is to enable government and key industry verticals to leverage AI and deliver public transformation contributing an additional 1 per cent to Telangana GDP,” he said.

Rama Rao said Telangana would ensure that AI serve humanity and the common good while enforcing fundamental rights such as privacy, equality, fairness and democracy.

Hyderabad: As scientific disciplines go, the field of ‘Deep Learning’ is but an infant. However, it will soon have a disruptive effect on the field of drug design, experts say.

They were speaking at a panel discussion as part of the ongoing international conference on high performance computing in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Deep learning, a subset of machine learning, functions by imitating the workings of the human brain to process large amounts of data. The artificial neural networks used in these functions have neuron nodes connected together like a web.

This enables deep learning systems to process data in a non-linear manner, unlike traditional programmes which do so in a linear way.

The panel experts on Monday, which included members from both academia and industry, said deep learning has proven instrumental in areas such as modelling protein structures, human genome interpretation for personalised medicine and understanding host-pathogen interactions (HPI).

Devapriya Kumar, associate professor and head of the centre for computational natural sciences and bioinformatics (CCNSB) at IIIT, Hyderabad, said, “For long, if one had to design a drug for a particular purpose, we took existing compounds which might be close to what we want and performed experiments on them. We would eventually arrive at a synthesised compound that has the properties we want. However, using deep learning functions, we can tell the computer what properties we want in a drug and it would arrive at a compound itself.”

Kumar explained that computing models can also help predict how easily these drugs can be synthesised on a large-scale basis. “After all, it isn’t enough for us to have a compound that does what we need it to do. It should be easy to produce for commercial viability,” he added.

Gopalakrishnan Bulusu, principal scientist at TCS Innovation Labs, Hyderabad, said deep learning could be used to understand the human genome better. “We still do not have a clear understanding of how many pathogens infect hosts such as a human body. We need more data and we need to process this data properly as well. Deep learning functions can help in these aspects,” he said.

‘Deep learning’ in drug design is such a new field that around the world, there are only 200 startups working on it. Most pharmaceutical giants have started to work in this field but there too the activity is in the nascent stage. Speaking with Deccan Chronicle, Kumar said, “Three years ago, this industry didn’t exist. In fact, the number of startups, which is 200 today, was only 80 six months ago.”

Kumar admitted there was a long way to go before India is considered a major player in the field. “Most activity in deep learning in India has been in the field of medical diagnostics.” There are a few startups in Hyderabad that do this. Not a lot has been done in drug design. However, I won’t say we have missed the bus or anything. The field is still brand new and there is ample scope for future activity,” he said.
