Source – https://www.analyticsinsight.net/

Often the words such as data, information, and insight are used interchangeably, but these words are not similar, they have different meanings. Understanding those differences can help you tailor your program to benefit your business.

What is data? How does that turn into information and what kind of insights does it yield?

These differences are confusing right! But the distinctions are the simple ones you see how they work together. Let’s see what their definitions actually mean.

What is Data?

Data is raw with unprocessed facts that we capture according to some agreed standards. Data can be in the form of numbers, images, audio, transcriptions, etc. While working on analytics projects, the first task is to go through the client’s data structure or even normalize it.

What is Information?

Information is a collection of data points that we can use to understand something that needs to be measured. It is data that is processed, aggregated into a manner humans could read and understand. The common ways to present information are through data visualization, reports, and dashboards.

What is Insight?

Insights are gained by analyzing data and information to understand and draw conclusions that can benefit the organization while decision making. These are the final outputs of the data in a usable form.

How they work together

The data, information, and insight work together to yield a complete analytics package. In an organization the data is collected in a raw manner, later it is converted into a readable format that is the information, this information is later processed to insights which are highly valuable in making big decisions of the firm. If one is absent or inconsistent that means it can affect the overall functioning of the company.

Impact of Insight on Business Decisions

Data-driven marketing is the latest word that is heard everywhere, but insights are more powerful than that. Most of the brands already have data but couldn’t find the right insights. Insight can help in talking about the value of your business more than data does.

Any business decisions depend on insights not the raw form of data. These insights can make a wide difference in the strategies and performance of businesses. Great insights can help you overcome any kind of market problems such as competitors, and consumer behavior. All kinds of evolutionary changes can occur only with the insights that can help decide better in the market.

According to Global Web Index, insights are four kinds, they are Human, Universal, True to Brand, and Targeted. In other words, a great insight reveals a story that is unique to the brands. Insights help the company and customers by coming up with new and fresh ideas.

The road to getting out valuable insights is through adequate research. Here are a few steps that can help you put information for the benefit of your business.

Goal: Set the right goal and objectives for the organization to achieve through the research. This can ensure you understand better what the company actually needs.

Collect: Once you’re done researching, the next step comes a collection of the data, whether through quantitative or qualitative.

Analyze: Here the collected data is analyzed to get valued insights. It can be about your customers, employees, products, and satisfaction.

Action: The last and final step comes where the insights are gained from analysis and these are put into action by the businesses which can help in a better decision-making process.

Now, hope you got what is the difference between data vs information vs insights and also understood how insights can impact business decisions.

The coleader of computational design at SmithGroup explains how machine learning tools can refine data into information, helping designers work smarter.

Technology is changing the world as we know—and design—it. But have architects and designers unlocked the full potential of cutting-edge digital tools? In this series of comments, practitioners with a visionary approach examine some of the most influential and disruptive tech today—like blockchain technology, VR/AR/MR, spatial computing, machine learning, and cloud computing—and envisage their impact on the practice of architecture and interior design tomorrow. The changes they describe, while forecasts, will likely come to fruition, driving the way we plan, work, and create. Consider this a glimpse of the not-so-distant future.

Machine learning will enable a more integrated, informed design process by disrupting how and when architects engage with data. If we begin by viewing machine learning as a collection of algorithmic tools that refine data into information—just as a saw helps to shape wood into furniture—the opportunities these tools present become more focused. I imagine machine learning tools will help design professionals understand the impact of decisions as they are made—not days or weeks later.

Methods such as surrogate modeling, which uses regressor algorithms to replace slow calculation engines with an instantaneous predictive “surrogate,” will support real-time, data-rich design interfaces that allow teams to react at the speed of a designer’s curiosity. I expect future engineers will operate like data analysts. They will spend most of their time modeling, analyzing, and explaining data rather than manually operating analysis software. For example, once a design challenge is parametrically modeled and translated into structured data—an approach we call design space exploration—simple algorithms like multiple linear regression can measure which parameters have the greatest impact on performance.

Clustering algorithms, classifiers, and dimensionality reduction techniques can then be used to tease out obscure relationships that can provide actionable direction to teams. These algorithms represent a fraction of the machine learning tools that design professionals can and should learn to use. But machine learning algorithms are not magic. They are tools of the information age that we can leverage to better inform the design process moving forward.

Robochamps, an edtech start-up dedicated to introducing kids to early AI education, recently launched online courses in robotics and coding in multiple languages, including Hindi, Gujarati, Punjabi, and English.

An official release said the company would provide free courses to kids in the age group of 6 to 17 years, living in rural areas.

Robochamps has entered the vernacular segment in view of the sudden surge in the number of inquiries from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, following the launch of its English online courses. Within a month of the launch of its English courses, its website has received 3 million footfalls.

Robochamps aims to use language localisation as a key channel to penetrate rural and semi-urban markets in India and will soon launch courses in other local languages.

The company will help students experience hands-on practice in STEM Subjects by using robotics and other digital methodologies. The start-up will also conduct a series of webinars to guide children in their careers and will also collaborate with famous academicians such as Anand Kumar.

Akshay Ahuja, CEO & Founder, RoboChamps said in an official statement: “As per market research company Kantar, India’s rural market is contributing in a big way to the digital revolution, with a 45 per cent growth in internet penetration in 2019, as compared to urban India’s 11 per cent. Rural India has 264 million internet users; this is expected to touch 304 million in 2020. Also, the report highlights that local language content and video drive the Internet boom in rural India, with a 2.5 times rise in penetration in the last four years.”

According to Ahuja, the Internet and smartphones have been used widely by rural India for the past couple of years. A number of brands across sectors have made an entry through both these mediums and made an impact using language localisation. “Our motto is just the same; creating young AI Millenials in rural India so they can help prevent a future pandemic. We plan to train children to make apps, robots, and other tech innovations that could minimise human interventions. With the launch of our vernacular courses, we are targeting to capture more than 150 cities across India by the year-end and reach 2 lakh students in the next 1 month,” he added.

The start-up has been operating in a B2B offline classroom model. With the help of its team of specialised trainers, it will educate students online through various curriculums it has been using across schools, the company said.

According to a report by IAMAI and Nielsen, as of November 2019 rural India had 227 million active Internet users, 10 per cent more than urban India’s 205 million users. The report highlights that the rural areas have 22.7 crore Internet users, while in urban areas, the active number of Internet users is 20.5 crore. The findings also said the country has around 71 million kids in the 5-11 age group who use the internet from their family members’ devices. Google’s recent report states that Hindi web consumption has grown over 90 per cent during 2015-16, while English content growth was only 19 per cent.

The following editorial appeared in Sunday’s Japan News-Yomiuri:

Fake videos misusing artificial intelligence are spreading on the internet. Is the information coming from a credible source? Is the content reliable? It is important to be aware of them on a daily basis.

A video of U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi looking drunk while giving a lecture was disseminated online in May. The video was deliberately slowed down, and it is not clear who posted it online. Seemingly aimed at smearing her, it was viewed more than 3 million times.

The forgery of still images and falsification of printed materials have been around for a long time. In recent years, it has become possible to superimpose the movements of other people’s lips and facial expressions onto celebrities’ faces using AI learning functions. Artificial audio can be used to create videos of real-life figures saying falsified lines.

“Deep fake” is a coined word that combines AI deep learning and fake.

It is concerning that this technology could be abused to manipulate information in order to disrupt society.

In the 2016 U.S. presidential election, false information to attack candidates was circulated online, and Russia was accused of involvement. There are fears that more sophisticated intervention could take place using fake videos in the 2020 presidential election.

This situation threatens fair elections, which are the foundation of democracy. Thus measures to deal with this should be urgently devised.

Experts warn that if such false information spreads in the field of military information, national security could be threatened.

Short videos are posted on social media one after another. They are shared among like-minded people and spread instantly. The nature of the internet heightens the danger of fake videos.

Concerns over the manipulation of information are also growing in Japan.

During the House of Councillors election in July, a bogus post spread that claimed “the salaries of Diet members will be raised.”

In 2013, the ban on online campaigning for national and local elections was lifted. In the recent upper house election, an increasing number of people posted videos on social media. Caution cannot be neglected against politically motivated inducements.

Broadcasters receive images of accident sites, among other materials, from outside sources. There was a case in which a broadcaster was forced to apologize for airing video of a similar incident that had happened in the past.

In May, a panel of experts under the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry began full-fledged discussions on measures to deal with false information. It must draw up effective measures by referring to each country.

The internet is an indispensable platform as a tool for obtaining information and connecting with other people. Information should be understood correctly while using the internet.
