<p>The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) has infiltrated many industries and cable is no exception. We are seeing cable network operators increasingly embrace the power of AI and ML to improve the network.</p>



<p>In the Spring of 2020, SCTE launched a working group to create standards for AI and ML for the cable industry. The work of the AI/ML working group represents just one part of the SCTE Explorer Initiative which launched in 2020 as part of SCTE’s Standards program, the only ANSI-accredited platform for developing technical standards supporting cable broadband networks. The Explorer Initiative is made up of seven working groups – including aging in place and telehealth, and telemedicine, smart cities, and more – that represent industries, technologies, or practices that will place significant demands on telecommunications infrastructure.</p>



<p>Tasked with exploring how AI and ML can be leveraged to make the network more efficient, this group consists of more than 50 participants from both inside and outside of cable who have been working diligently to shape industry best practices around data governance, anomaly detection, digital piracy, and automated video and ad analysis. Over the past year, the group has made significant progress toward the creation of standards in several areas that will help the industry advance toward 10G and will support scalability of new technology deployments across the network, including the use of ML for spectral impairment detection, HFC node splits, and video metadata extraction.</p>



<p><strong>Machine Learning and Preventative Network Maintenance</strong></p>



<p>The working group has made significant progress over the past year on creating a standard for how cable operators can apply machine learning for preventative network maintenance (PNM). The initial work has been around the use of ML for spectral impairment detection across the access network to create automated diagnostic reporting and mitigation.</p>



<p>Spectral impairments from a variety of sources contribute to a large percentage of infrastructure issues. We are seeing that machine learning models can be trained with numerous sets of labeled spectral impairment observations, including 15 different types of impairment (i.e. tilt, roll-off, notch, foreign carrier, etc.), to return a complete impairment diagnostic. These models, which learn over time to become more accurate, improve the rapid identification and mitigation of impairments to provide fewer network disruptions. Once complete, a standard for this application will assist cable operators big and small, and improve network service for everyone.</p>



<p><strong>Machine Learning for Network Management</strong></p>



<p>Another area the working group has focused on over the past year is the application of ML for network management, specifically HFC node splits. Commonly used by network operators to provide greater bandwidth and capacity to a specific geographic area, node splits require considerable labor and capital investment. This typically leads operators to prioritize where to invest finite resources, a process that has historically relied on a time intensive manual evaluation effort. Machine learning models are proving effective at evaluating the variables to rapidly provide actionable node split reports. The development of an industry standard for this application promises to speed up network growth, improve network efficiency, and provide customers with reliable high-speed services as the network continues to grow.</p>



<p><strong>Artificial Intelligence and Video Piracy</strong></p>



<p>Another area in which the working group has been busy over the past year is around developing best practices for video metadata extraction.</p>



<p>A standard around the application of artificial intelligence on the network to detect signatures of bad actors will help control video piracy. The work of the group over the past year indicates that the use of AI can significantly reduce video piracy. The successful creation and application of a standard around this use case has the potential to provide remarkable benefits to content creators, streaming servicing, and others. The work of the group around video piracy illustrates the power of having technology experts from both inside and outside of the industry working together to create standards.</p>



<p>Over the next couple of years, we expect to see new methods arise for leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning to optimize</p>



<p>network operations. And, as the industry advances towards 10G, emerging technologies will continue to place demands on the industry to not only keep pace, but to remain ahead of the rapid acceleration of technology. <p>A part of what we see in science fiction movies will soon become a reality, thanks to artificial intelligence. Every time you saw people talking to holograms in sci-fi movies and thought to yourself “that would be awesome to have”, you just might be closer to that future. Smartphones will soon be able to create photorealistic 3D holograms with an AI model developed by a research team at MIT. This system determines the best way to generate holograms from a sequence of input images. This fascinating technology could have applications for VR and AR headsets. Unlike conventional 3D and VR displays that create the illusion of depth causing nausea and headaches, a holographic display can be viewed by people without straining their eyes.</p>



<p>A major challenge in creating holographic media is maintaining the data that is needed to create holographs. Every holograph constitutes huge amounts of data which creates the “depth” of the holographs. This is why creating a hologram demands lots of computing power. To simplify this process, researchers at MIT applied deep convolutional neural networks to the problem. This approach created a network that is capable of quickly generating holograms based on pictographic data.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Past Vs Present</strong></h4>



<p>The traditional method of generating holograms creates many chunks of holograms and then uses scientific simulations to combine the chunks into a complete pictorial representation. This process is power-intensive and time-consuming. But according to the IEEE spectrum, the method designed by the team of researchers at MIT is a lot different. It uses deep learning networks to slice images into chunks that can be recompiled into holograms using fewer “slices” than that of the traditional methods. This is possible because of the convolutional neural network’s ability to analyze images and separate them into discrete chunks. This new method is far less power-intensive.</p>



<p>In order to design this artificial intelligence holographic generator, the MIT team began by creating a database that included approximately 4000 computer-generated images, with a matchable 3D hologram allotted to each of those images. Based on this dataset, the convolutional neural network was trained to learn the way each of those images was connected to its hologram. When the artificial intelligence system was given the unseen data with depth information, it was able to generate new holograms with the given data. For this process, the depth information is supplied to the AI system through the use of a lidar sensor of multi-camera displays that renders it as a computer-generated image. Some iPhones have these components which makes it possible to generate holograms if connected to the right type of display.</p>



<p>The new artificial intelligence hologram system needs less memory than the traditional methods. This system can create colored 3D holograms at a speed of 60 frames per second with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 using approximately 620 KB of memory, all this by running on a single graphics processing unit (GPU). The MIT research team was able to run their new AI technology on an iPhone 11 creating 1 hologram per second. They also tried it on a Google Edge TPU which could create 2 holograms per second. This implies that the artificial intelligence hologram system can have applications in volumetric 3D printing or in the designing of holographic microscopes.</p>



<p>This is just the inception of this technology. In the future, with further advancements, this technology might revolutionize our way of communication and perceiving visual data. It surely is an exciting time for the tech world.</p>

<p>AI can exploit the vulnerabilities of a person&#8217;s decision-making habits and patterns.</p>



<p>A new study by researchers from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation&#8217;s (CSIRO) Data61, in partnership with the Australian National University and researchers from Germany, has revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) can influence human decision-making.</p>



<p>Spearheaded by CSIRO scientist Amir Dezfouli, the study [PDF] involved running three experiments where participants played games against a computer.</p>



<p>The first two tests involved participants clicking on red or blue coloured boxes to win a fake currency. In the third experiment, participants were given two options as to how they could invest some fake currency. In the scenario, participants played the role of the investor while the AI played the role of the trustee.</p>



<p>As all three games went on, the AI learned the participants&#8217; choice patterns that eventually saw it guide the players towards specific choices. For instance, by the third game, the AI was learning how to get participants to give it more money.  </p>



<p>Dezfouli said the study highlighted that AI could influence human decision-making by exploiting the vulnerabilities of an individual&#8217;s habits and patterns.</p>



<p>&#8220;Although the research was theoretical, it advances our understanding of how people make choices. This knowledge is valuable because it allows us to mitigate our vulnerabilities so we can better detect and avoid flawed choice as a result of potential misuse of AI,&#8221; he said.</p>



<p>He added that the way future AI operates will be dependent on its creators.</p>



<p>&#8220;Ensuring AI and machine learning are used as a force for good &#8212; to improve outcomes for society &#8212; will ultimately come down to how responsibly we set them up in the first place,&#8221; Dezfouli said.</p>



<p>The study has been published in the&nbsp;<em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</em>&nbsp;journal.</p>



<p>At the end of last year, Data61 researchers developed an implantable artificial intelligence monitoring and seizure detection helmet system designed to prevent seizure disorders for patients who have undergone decompressive brain surgery.</p>



<p>The detection system was developed and trained using traumatic brain injury data from Monash University to monitor brain activity for seizures while in standby mode before it is reactivated when a seizure is detected.</p>



<p>&#8220;Monitoring brain activity post-surgery is especially critical to a patient&#8217;s recovery as seizures can regularly occur, often leading to patients developing epilepsy,&#8221; CSIRO&#8217;s Data61 researcher Dr Umut Guvenc said at the time.</p>



<p>&#8220;These seizures are often difficult to detect, with current monitoring techniques only able to be used in a hospital using bulky devices for less than 24 hours, providing a brief snapshot of brain activity during that time only.</p>



<p>&#8220;This new method can continuously monitor brain activity wirelessly, allowing the patient to be mobile, comfortable, and more socially active.&#8221;</p>
