Considered a new and uncharted territory, the development of artificial intelligence technology could augment what humans could do by providing the much-needed support to extend their capabilities. But despite its promising benefits, AI researcher and expert Arend Hintzerevealed his greatest fears when it comes to the ever-evolving AI technology.

In Hintze’s The Conversation article, he detailed his fears of “the unforeseen, of misuse, of wrong social priorities and of the nightmare scenario.” Due to the fact that its development could unpredictably succeed or fail, the “risk for unintended consequences” increases.

To sum it up, the future of artificial intelligence relies on how humans weigh in the good and the bad. Humans possess ethics and morals that often guide them on how to determine the possible repercussions of these latest technological advancements or innovations and its potential impacts on humanity and the society.

Dark side, threats, and problems of artificial intelligence

Aside from the growing concerns and fears over the unstoppable evolution of AI, humans are also warned over the negativities or the so-called “dark side” of the said technology. One of which is when computers and robots become smarter than human beings.

Despite AI’s benefits, Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk and Bill Gates also acknowledge its “dark side.” As computers become intellectually superior, they could outstrip human researchers, outsmart financial markets, out-manipulate human leaders, and could develop weapons humans can’t fathom.

With that said, humanity faces two serious impacts. According to Hawking, the short-term effect depends on who controls AI while the long term impact depends on whether it can be controlled at all.

Hawking added the biggest threat to the full development of artificial intelligence is the reality that it could “end the human race.”

Musk, on the other hand, likened AI development to “summoning a demon.” Gates also expressed his concerns about the rise of super intelligence.

As for the problems with artificial intelligence, Coplin highlighted the prejudices concluded by the people and the firms behind the development of artificial intelligence. AI algorithms could also result in a much serious discrimination issue “by codifying the biases that exist both overtly and unconsciously in human society,” Axios revealed.

The AI era

We are currently in a generation where modern technology thrives. And when it comes to AI technology, several innovations have been making great strides in various aspects such as the more efficient AI bots or assistants that could be the future of retail sales.

Moreover, the presence of non-human intelligence in the medical field (aka super-human doctors) aims to eliminate human error and deliver “greater efficiency, prompt care and more accurate diagnosis.” #machine learning and AI are also making the features of smartphones and tablets more impressive.
