Fundstrat Digital Asset Consulting has produced another report updating its clients on BSV ecosystem progress. The report, released exclusively to investors last week, refers to BSV as “a Web 3.0 platform,” describes the concept of “Blockchain as a Service (BaaS)”, big data application potential, and gives some examples of the companies building on the network in different ways.

Similar to previous reports, Fundstrat (headed by well-known Wall Street strategist Thomas Lee) describes BSV’s “unique technological approach” as its most compelling aspect. Its large-scale data processing capabilities, combined with the security and verifiability of blockchain records, mean that developers are building real applications with real use cases. Industries seriously looking at the BSV network include supply chains, healthcare, payments, real estate, e-government services and more.

The emergence of BaaS infrastructure solutions will make enterprise adoption easier, the report says. Some of the projects it profiles are aimed at building solutions for others to come onboard without first spending years studying Bitcoin and blockchain history and the technical challenges of integrating their systems.

Fundstrat has published previous reports on BSV to its list of investor clients, in November 2019 and February and July 2020. Those reports also focused on BSV’s big data focus and “unique vision” compared to other blockchain networks, and highlighted the growing number of businesses building its infrastructure.

It says:

“The BSV and BTC networks are going after very different use cases. BSV is positioning itself as a Web 3.0 platform upon which Dapps and enterprise data applications are built that can store data directly on the main block chain layer (efficiently, for low fees) due to its unbounded block size cap. This approach has tradeoffs but is unique relative to other blockchains as it allows for certain types of big data applications that may not be well suited for other networks.”

The report includes a PowerPoint presentation that gives a general overview of the BSV network and its architecture. It details the functions of services like mAPI and MinerID for obtaining transaction fee information, and the relationships between miners (transaction processors), pools and ordinary users. It describes the structure of the BSV Metanet and provides statistics on BSV unit price, volumes, transaction counts, exchanges and average per-transaction fees (notably, these are US$0.0013 on BSV, $8.22 on Ethereum and $10.16 on BTC).

In targeting the “big data” enterprise market, BSV should serve the “Three Vs of Big Data” which are volume, velocity and variety. The report lists the benefits of users’ ability to own their own data and keep it both private and secure, noting the massive costs to organizations in the event of a data breach.

Companies named in the report include UNISOT, Veridat, nChain, TAAL, Fabriik, Planaria, MetaStreme, Mattercloud, FYX, BitBoss, Haste, Transmira, Twetch and Relica, EHR Data, and wallets HandCash, RelayX, DotWallet and Money Button. These companies cover a wide variety of big data use scenarios, showing BSV’s versatility and potential business models.

Fundstrat does warn that becoming involved with BSV carries risk due to the criticism it often receives from other sectors of the blockchain industry, saying “We recognize that there is a subset of the crypto community that does not have a favorable view of certain BSV supporters and the BSV coin or anyone who associates with it as an extension.”

We should note that much of that criticism comes from coordinated attacks on BSV from those who stand to lose the most commercially should BSV’s superior technology continue to prove itself over existing platforms. ETH routinely fails to scale to perform contract functions at both technical and economic levels, while BTC’s deliberately crippled capacity make its transaction fees prohibitively high to use as a payments network.

However, the report does mention that the blockchain industry is maturing and “maximalism fading.” While BSV would need to prove it can overcome this polarization and move past its “early reputational criticisms” in order to succeed, BSV’s focus on enterprise tier data applications and the BaaS infrastructure could convince more outsiders to take the plunge. Building a healthy user community was critical to achieving success, it concluded.

Google partner Servian has revealed that it was behind “Monty”, an AI tool Fox Sports used to predict when wickets would fall during cricket matches, and has already delivered an upgrade to the tool.

Monty was developed in 2019 and works by using historical data from previous matches as well as live data, such as player behaviour and pitch conditions, to determine the chance of a wicket. Predictions made by the tool were used live during Fox Sports’ coverage of cricket and proved accurate: Monty was live but not broadcasting for an Australia vs. Pakistan match in November 2019 and successfully predicted the first wicket of the game – although the technicality of a no-ball meant the batter was not out. Monty then predicted the actual first wicket in the same innings.

Monty is important because Fox Sports does not have exclusive rights to Test cricket, as the matches are also available on free-to-air television. Fox therefore needs to find ways to engage fans. Monty helps Fox Sports to create that reason to sign up for its coverage over alternatives – and also makes the broadcaster’s apps more attractive.

The bot is built on Google Cloud and took just four weeks to create, with Servian working alongside Google and Fox Sports.

Servian’s upgrade, said Google Practice Lead Andrew Pym, “managed to expand the number of machine learning features from 65 to 86, which allowed for more analysis and higher accuracy. The most significant addition was the bowler and batsman combinations,”

“We continued the use of Google Cloud’s serverless tools including BigQuery and AutoML Tables, but added an event-driven approach to the serverless infrastructure,” Pym added. “This supported the rapid development of multiple models for multiple games, which will be important for iterating and expanding Monty moving forward.”

Future upgrades will be able to support the development of advanced features that describe the many nuances of cricket. Refreshes will also take into account new players.

Microsoft is adding new applications and features to its Dynamics 365 CRM and ERP portfolio, officials announced today, September 23. Many of the new additions to the line-up are “AI-driven,” which in this case, means they are built on various Microsoft AI technologies that are now part of a new “Azure AI” brand.

Microsoft currently sells several AI-centric “Insights” applications as part of its Dynamics 365 family of products. These include Customer Insights; Customer Service Insights; Market Insights; and Sales Insights. The company announced earlier this year that it would offer between October 1 and March 2020 many incremental new features for these apps and others in the Dynamics 365 and PowerApps family as part of its Wave 2 release. Today, September 23, Microsoft revealed yet more new features and products coming to the Dynamics 365 stable.

Microsoft is adding to its Customer Insights application support for business-to-business (B2B) transactions, in addition to the current business-to-consumer (B2C) support in the app. Microsoft originally made Customer Insights available in the spring of 2019 with the goal of using AI to improve analysis of customer data. The B2B feature addition will be generally available as of October 1.

Microsoft also is adding a brand-new app called Product Insights to its “Insights” family. Product Insights, available in public preview as of October 1, will use AI to help customers better understand product use; to proactively design products and to resolve product issues.

Microsoft is adding new functionality to its Dynamics 365 Virtual Agent for Customer Service bot. Microsoft is improving the service so that customers can test their virtual gents internally before launching them publicly. The new-and-improved offering should be generally available December 1, officials said.

Microsoft also is releasing a new feature to its Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management product. This feature, IoT Intelligence, is meant to help customers see a real-time view of inventory; proactively manage operations to improve uptime, throughput and product quality; and to predict and proactively resolve issues. This new IoT feature will be available in public preview starting October 1.

The “AI” bits in these new features and apps come from a number of existing Azure AI services that Microsoft currently offers. Going forward, Microsoft is going to start referring to these various AI technologies as “Azure AI.”

Azure AI includes machine learning (Azure Machine Learning, Azure Databricks and ONNX); knowledge mining (Azure Search and Form Recognizer) and AI app/agent services (Azure Cognitive Services and Azure Bot Service). Microsoft is not planning to sell Azure AI as a packaged offering; the use of the term is more of a branding thing.

In other Dynamics 365 news, Microsoft is going to be replacing its Dynamics 365 Retail application with a new Dynamics 365 Commerce offering. Commerce will be available in private preview starting today, September 23. Microsoft describes the new Commerce app as “an evolution of Dynamics 365 Retail,” which will now include end-to-end commerce capabilities. The new app is meant to unify the back office, in store, call center and digital experiences, officials said.

The Dubai Taxi Corporation has launched a new control centre and reviewed its smart transformation plan.

In a recent visit to the DTC headquarters, Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), inaugurated the new control centre of Dubai Taxi, which covers all taxi services.

The centre also monitors negative practices of offensive drivers, attendance & dispersal of students and bus conductors, tracks bus movement, and controls the fleet. It also manages the operation of 505 limousines, ‘Mashaweer’ and ‘In Safe Hands’ services as well as the smart towing service. It also enables electronic surveillance of taxi movement, verifies compliance with work controls, and moves stopping and late-coming vehicles.

During the inauguration, Al Tayer was briefed about the control centre; which has been equipped with the latest technologies for monitoring and operating the taxi service. With a capacity for 11 staff per shift, the centre can manage the operation of 5,200 taxis, and 373 school buses serving 17 schools.

The new centre also measures the daily efficiency of vehicles movement, analyses data, and acts appropriately to step up the performance level. It also monitors the integration with the Enterprise Command & Control Centre (EC3) systems of RTA.

Al Tayer reviewed the new corporate identity and logo of Dubai Taxi Corporation. It maintains the brand name, reduces it to three letters and integrates it in the revamped design of the DTC logo.

He reviewed DTC’s Smart Transformation Plan (2018-2020) based on three pillars: Clients, Drivers and Employees.

As for Clients, DTC has accomplished 20 projects out of 36 projects designed to improve the services to customers and make them happier. Schools buses were fitted with devices for tracking and monitoring buses and students for added security & safety. Buses were also equipped with GPS systems, radio waves to scan identity, app, booking and students smart tracking systems. DTC has also upgraded its website to cover introductory information about services on offer and the booking of services online.

In terms of drivers, DTC has automated 38 out of 61 services. It had launched the drivers’ stress measurement system operated via cameras fixed in the taxi’s interior to focus on the driver’s face only to monitor his motion and condition to detect any signs of fatigue or emergency conditions. The system sends automated alerts to the driver and cautionary signals to the control centre to assure the safety of drivers and riders.

For the employees, DTC has accomplished 20 automated projects out of 58 projects. Amongst the most important projects that have been recently completed is the taxi smart technical testing system; which has reduced the time taken in testing taxis from 40 minutes to just four minutes maximum. The system had also cut short the number of required testing supervisors from five to one only.

As part of the new scheme, the entity will also integrate artificial intelligence in serving the Airport Taxi, digital ads, and smart booking besides using hologram technology, and the smart chat for serving both employees and drivers.

The RTA director general also reviewed the new services launched by the DTC such as the royal limo. It is a deluxe vehicle fitted with display monitors, video communication with the chauffeur, internet, fridge, internal speakers, massage seats, and a USB port for charging mobile phones.

It’s easy to imagine artificial intelligence as a force that makes existing technology more convenient or more powerful, or as one that opens the door to entirely novel possibilities. But one overlooked effect could dramatically change our society, and how we live in it: the costs of goods and services.

Thanks to AI-empowered technology, we may soon be headed for a post-scarcity society, in which the basic goods and services we need to live and be happy are so inexpensive and/or easy to procure, they might as well be free. But is this vision too optimistic, or is it feasible to hope for?

Consolidation of hardware

We’re already seeing the drastic cost-reducing potential for AI in the consolidation of hardware. Though some tech reviewers have criticized the “new normal” price point for smartphones being $1,000, the reality is smartphones have replaced dozens, if not hundreds of other single-function devices, including everything from portable stereos to flashlights to TVs, not to mention personal computers. The average person has more computing power and more high-tech functionality in his or her pocket than even the wealthiest family had back in the 1990s. If that trend continues, we’ll see even more functionality in even cheaper, smaller devices.

Energy and resources

AI will also be capable of making energy much less expensive to produce and store. The average consumer already has access to hundreds of products capable of reducing the amount of energy they consume, including “smart” appliances like refrigerators, which can optimize and automate certain functions to keep energy costs low. On a bigger scale, AI algorithms can make clean, renewable energy sources (like wind and solar) more efficient, ultimately reducing the cost of production, and the costs of producing and distributing food products.

Insurance payments

Though not the first area of cost reduction that people think of, AI has the power to greatly reduce the cost of insurance in all areas, including health insurance and auto insurance. Refined algorithms can more specifically calculate an individual’s risk factors, giving them the best possible rate for any policy. Plus, advanced algorithms can lower the risk of needing to file an insurance claim. For example, AI-powered self-driving cars have the potential to greatly reduce the risk of collisions, which in turn would make insurance dramatically cheaper for everyone, and advanced algorithms in the medical field can detect instances of cancer and other complex illnesses sooner, reducing the total costs associated with curing or treating those illnesses.

Data

Many modern tech companies exist on the premise that consumer data is more valuable than any single product or service they could offer; estimates put the average value of a customer’s data over the course of a year to be $240 at a minimum—and probably much more valuable than that. This is why it’s free to use apps like Facebook and Google.

In the future, AI algorithms will be so sophisticated and tech companies will be so mature that the value of consumer data will be much higher, and the average consumer will provide more data with every digital interaction. At that point, tech companies may be interested in providing consumers with smartphones and other devices for free, with the intention of collecting enough data to counteract the costs of production and distribution.

Transportation

We alluded to the effects of AI on the transportation industry a bit in our section on insurance, but it pays to do a somewhat deeper dive. The big breakthrough here will be self-driving technology, which could transform not only the average consumer’s car-based commute, but public transportation as well. With a fleet of always-ready self-driving (presumably electric) cars at the ready, street congestion could be greatly reduced, the cost of car ownership would be better distributed, parking needs would disappear, and the average cost per trip would be much lower (since no driver would be necessary). Consumers will also have more time to focus on other tasks, whether it’s working productively or enjoying themselves, which can improve both productivity and quality of life.

Health care

Health care costs will likely remain high for the foreseeable future, but gradually, AI will gain the power to reduce those costs. Proactive screenings can be automated, AI algorithms will detect conditions faster (and more reliably), and certain surgeries could be performed without the need for an expensive doctor.

A jobless, moneyless future?

Technological optimists have been painting a vision for a future where jobs aren’t necessary (or common), while their opponents have criticized this idea as either ludicrous or destructive (or both). But the reality is, we’re already seeing enormous progress toward reduced costs. If followed to its natural conclusion, it’s only a matter of time—whether that’s years or decades—before we find ourselves in a post-scarcity society. The time is now to start thinking about what that future could look like, and how we should form our economies and social structures around it.
