<p>Led by former engineers from Tesla and Faraday Future, Hemant Sikaria and Mayank Sikaria, Sibros is an automotive technology company offering a next-generation vehicle-to-cloud automotive software platform. </p>



<p>CEO and co-founder Hemant Sikaria had the light bulb moment to start Sibros when he had to make multiple trips to his car dealer due to a software recall. Upon further research, he realised the majority of OEMs did not have the necessary capabilities for advanced full vehicle updates. In fact, global OEMs have been facing significant software and data complexity challenges as vehicles were increasingly shifting towards electrification and self-driving modes. Synergising Hemant’s experience at Tesla in building systems that could solve these problems with Over-the-Air (OTA) programming, and Mayanks’s significant contributions to the software, data and battery management systems at Faraday, the duo teamed up to form Sibros.</p>



<p>Analytics India Magazine got in touch with the founders to understand how Sibros is leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence to help automakers build new connectivity use cases and business models.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-leading-the-way-with-ml"><strong>Leading The Way With ML</strong></h3>



<p>The advancement in 5G technology along with software-defined vehicles has allowed Over-the-Air software updates to extend beyond just telematics and head unit applications. As a matter of fact, the connected car revolution has made OTA software an industry standard for automakers. For the uninitiated, OTA can reduce consequential software recalls to create new revenue opportunities, and enhance the customer experience by shortening the time required to update, fix, and maintain vehicles throughout their entire lifecycle.</p>



<p>Sibros’ flagship product, OTA Deep Updater executes full vehicle Over-the-Air (OTA) software updates while logging vital vehicle data in real-time from every sensor and microchip. The solution supports any vehicle platform, architecture and hardware, starting from two to four wheelers, commercial trucks/busses to electric, and internal combustion to hybrid vehicles. </p>



<p>Explaining the process, Hemant stated: Sibros collects data at the edge that is processed with machine learning and artificial intelligence to help automakers build new connectivity use cases, and business models, like variable insurance, driver personalisation, fixing software recalls overnight, crash detection, etc.</p>



<p>With its modular system that provides full vehicle OTA updates to every sensor or engine control unit (ECU) while logging real-time vehicle data, Sibros’ deep connectivity platform really stands out in the market. “As modern vehicles can produce petabytes of data monthly, Sibros selectively capture the most meaningful data based on customisable events and triggers. This data is then further compressed and uploaded to the cloud backend,” explained Hemant. “This method enables efficient cloud computing throughput and enables OEMs to leverage live vehicle data for fleet/service management, developing new connected apps, building third party marketplaces and much more.” </p>



<p>The company uses machine learning, data pipelines and IoT to abstract, process and interpret vehicle data, such as fault codes, into human-readable formats on visual dashboards. “Our efforts on the AI and analytics front are all geared towards improving capabilities around safety measurement, failure detection and preventative maintenance,” said Mayank. “We offer insights into driving behaviour of each user on the platform by combining vehicle data such as speed or harsh acceleration and braking with external data sources like traffic, data and time.”</p>



<p>Sibros OTA Deep Updater can also automatically detect vehicle movement risks by flagging abnormalities in a vehicle’s manoeuvring patterns. Component usage like blending weather, altitude and region information, battery health, and performance also play a crucial role in providing insights to automakers for determining the optimal configuration of a battery in different markets.</p>



<p>Sibros’ core technology stack leverages Golang as the primary backend language to handle high currency workloads, with an outstanding balance between performance and developer velocity. However, for the frontend, the company leveraged React.js and React Native to deliver the product to multiple platforms without having to rewrite the stack from scratch. “We also heavily leverage cloud-native solutions including SQL/No-SQL and Kubernetes for container orchestration to avoid reinventing the wheel, and build our infrastructure as code using Terraform,” said Mayank.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-covid-impact"><strong>COVID Impact</strong></h3>



<p>“While initially, the COVID pandemic has ground the automotive industry to a halt, slowing the progress with plants shutting down, the things have now started to pick up slowly, and we see a tremendous uptick in business traction,” said Hemant. </p>



<p>As remote working and contactless interactions are becoming the new norm, Sibros was able to deliver an embedded software and cloud/analytics solution remotely. The solution is also enabling field technicians not to be physically present while performing R&amp;D and testing the beta vehicles. “As our solution is designed to enable fully Over-the-Air remote services, this ultimately benefits end customers to limit their exposure for visiting a dealer for servicing or utilising new connected services, such as in-vehicle payments for goods/food/tolling/parking,” added Hemant.</p>



<p>Despite COVID, Sibros has been able to build a diverse and inclusive work culture. The employees can work directly with clients in their initial months to see their ideas become a reality in their product roadmap and offerings. “Our current and future job requisitions span the gamut — from embedded firmware engineers and full-stack engineers to UI/UX, sales and marketing. We look for people who are coachable and rising stars, instead of necessarily looking for specific skill sets,” said Hemant.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wrapping-up"><strong>Wrapping up</strong></h3>



<p>Sibros currently has presence in multiple locations and is engaged with the largest Indian OEMs of two, three, and four wheeler vehicles. The founders believe that India is a high growth area for Sibros in terms of talent acquisition and building a customer base. The country holds great promise for the future of major automotive trends, particularly in areas of rapid charging infrastructure and EV production/adoption, they said.</p>



<p>The company has grown to over 40 employees and has raised $15 million in a Series A funding round led by Nexus Venture Partners. “Our customer base includes the vehicle manufacturers directly spanning some of the world’s largest funded EV startups to some of the biggest makers of two and four-wheeler vehicles,” added Hemant.</p>



<p>Speaking about the company’s five-year plans, Hemant said Sibros intends to enter other verticals where the technology can be applied with minimal changes. “We also plan to stand up a centre of excellence in Pune as well as expanding our presence in Germany, Japan and China. Our vision is that in five years, the connected vehicle ecosystem will become a mainstream reality, powered by Sibros. Much like smartphone ecosystems gave birth to disruptive services and apps such as Uber or Airbnb, so will the vehicle ecosystem. It’s moving rapidly, and we expect to gain much progress over the next five years to accomplish this vision,” he added.</p>

<p>UC Berkeley AI researchers say they’ve created AI for autonomous vehicles driving in unseen, real-world landscapes that outperforms leading methods for delivery robots driving on sidewalks. Called LaND, for Learning to Navigate from Disengagements, the navigation system studies disengagement events, then predicts when disengagements will happen in the future. The approach is meant to provide what the researchers call a needed shift in perspective about disengagements for the AI community.</p>



<p>A disengagement describes each instance when an autonomous system encounters challenging conditions and must turn control back over to a human operator. Disengagement events are a contested, and some say outdated, metric for measuring the capabilities of an autonomous vehicle system. AI researchers often treat disengagements as a signal for troubleshooting or debugging navigation systems for delivery robots on sidewalks or autonomous vehicles on roads, but LaND treats disengagements as part of training data.</p>



<p>Doing so, according to engineers from Berkeley AI Research, allows the robot to learn from datasets collected naturally during the testing process. Other systems have learned directly from training data gathered from onboard sensors, but researchers say that can require a lot of labeled data and be expensive.</p>



<p>“Our results demonstrate LaND can successfully learn to navigate in diverse, real world sidewalk environments, outperforming both imitation learning and reinforcement learning approaches,” the paper reads. “Our key insight is that if the robot can successfully learn to execute actions that avoid disengagement, then the robot will successfully perform the desired task. Crucially, unlike conventional reinforcement learning algorithms, which use task-specific reward functions, our approach does not even need to know the task — the task is specified implicitly through the disengagement signal. However, similar to standard reinforcement learning algorithms, our approach continuously improves because our learning algorithm reinforces actions that avoid disengagements.”</p>



<p>LaND utilizes reinforcement learning, but rather than seek a reward, each disengagement event is treated as a way to learn directly from input sensors like a camera while taking into account factors like steering angle and whether autonomy mode was engaged. The researchers detailed LaND in a paper and code published last week on preprint repository arXiv.</p>



<p>The team collected training data to build LaND by driving a Clearpath Jackal robot on the sidewalks of Berkeley. A human safety driver escorted the robot to reset its course or take over driving for a short period if the robot drove into a street, driveway, or other obstacle. In all, nearly 35,000 data points were collected and nearly 2,000 disengagements were produced during the LaND training on Berkeley sidewalks. Delivery robot startup Kiwibot also operates at UC Berkeley and on nearby sidewalks.</p>



<p>Compared with a deep reinforcement learning algorithm (Kendall et al.) and behavioral cloning, a common method of imitation learning, initial experiments showed that LaND traveled longer distances on sidewalks before disengaging.</p>



<p>In future work, authors say LaND can be combined with existing navigation systems, particularly leading imitation learning methods that use data from experts for improved results. Investigating ways to have the robot alert its handlers when it needs human monitoring could lower costs.</p>



<p>In other recent work focused on keeping training costs down for robotic systems, in August a group of UC Berkeley AI researchers created a simple method for training grasping systems that uses a $18 reacher-grabber and GoPro to collect training data for robotic grasping systems. Last year, Berkeley researchers including Pieter Abbeel, a coauthor of LaND research, introduced Blue, a general purpose robot that costs a fraction of existing robot systems.</p>

<p>Thus, the accurate and robust vehicle tracking algorithm is urgently needed when the tracking target suffering from heavy occlusions, illumination change and scale variation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A research team led by Prof. Dr. QIU Shi from&nbsp;the Xi&#8217;an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics (XIOPM) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) proposed the modified Gaussian mixture model (GMM) algorithm to reduce the error judgment probability of pixel state and extract the moving target accurately.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>The novel denoising auto encoder (DAE) neural network can also obtain sparse constraint in the hidden layer to limit vehicle feature model and achieve vehicle tracking accurately. The results were published in the Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Humanized Computing. </p>



<p>After utilizing DAE neural network and GMM moving target extraction, the tracker can be more robust to complex scenarios, including heavy occlusion, illumination change and also multiple targets.</p>



<p>&#8220;From the perspective of probability theory, our algorithm can reduce the probability of the error judgment of pixel state and extract the moving object better,&#8221; said Prof. QIU.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The&nbsp;results provided a novel idea in dealing with moving target in traffic applications. The Intelligent vehicle will drive on the road all by itself in the near future.</p>



<p>&#8220;Our method can be one part of the whole technique which may someday help accomplish the autonomous driving,&#8221; said QIU.</p>

<p>StradVision Inc. last week said it had raised $27 million in Series B funding. The Seoul, South Korea-based company makes vision processing technology for autonomous vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems, or ADAS.</p>



<p>Posco Capital led the round, which included investment from IDG Capital, Industrial Bank of Korea, Lighthouse Combined Investment, LSS Private Equity, Mirae Asset Venture Investment, Neoplux, and Timefolio Asset Management. StradVision has raised a total of $40 million to date.</p>



<p>“StradVision’s software solutions for autonomous vehicles and ADAS are proving successful and attractive to leading automakers and suppliers, as our latest round of funding strongly confirms,” stated Junhwan Kim, CEO of StradVision. “We appreciate all of our new investors coming on board, and StradVision will use this funding to take our groundbreaking products to the next level as we lead the advancement of camera technology in autonomous vehicles.”</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">SVNet provides high-level perception for ADAS</h3>



<p>StradVision said it is an industry leader in camera perception software, which plays a critical role in ADAS capabilities such as automatic emergency braking and blindspot detection. The company has registered 75 patents relating to its core technologies, and 79 more patent applications are in process.</p>



<p>The SVNet deep learning-based software enables high-level perception abilities including lane detection, traffic light and sign detection and recognition, object detection, and free space detection, said the company, which also has offices in Tokyo and San Jose, Calif.</p>



<p>The software, which includes SVNet External, SVNet Internal (for monitoring the driver and in-cabin experience), and SVNet Tools, provides real-time feedback, detects obstacles in blind spots, and alerts drivers to potential accidents. SVNet also prevents collisions by detecting lanes, abrupt lane changes, and vehicle speeds, even in poor lighting and weather conditions, according to StradVision.</p>



<p>SVNet’s Auto Labeling System (ALS) produces training data with minimal human input, and a semi-supervised, learning-based SVNet training tool enables customers to enhance SVNet by themselves during mass-production projects. This application of unsupervised learning, which functions similar to how the human brain organizes data, gives machines nearly limitless understanding of the visual information they see.</p>



<p>When paired with commercial, automotive-grade systems on chips (SoCs), SVNet’s deep neural network is fully optimized and interacts in real-time with the world it is viewing. Offering minimum latency and power consumption, the system uses artificial intelligence for proper real-world detection, tracking, segmentation, and classification, the company said.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">StradVision working on Level 2 through 4 self-driving cars</h3>



<p>The company added that it has partnerships with leading automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers for multiple mass-production projects in&nbsp;China&nbsp;and&nbsp;Europe. Millions of vehicles — including SUVs, sedans, and buses — will be using the SVNet software by 2021, claimed StradVision.</p>



<p>The vision provider recently earned the Automotive SPICE CL2 certification, as well as&nbsp;China’s&nbsp;Guobiao (GB) certificate, and it is already deploying ADAS vehicles on Chinese roads.</p>



<p>StradVision currently has more than 105 employees in&nbsp;the U.S.,&nbsp;Germany, South Korea, and&nbsp;Japan. It&nbsp;recently partnered with a leading global Tier 1 supplier and a number of commercial vehicle manufacturers on a side-camera project and custom camera technology for autonomous buses. Current StradVision projects range from Autonomy Levels 2 through 4.</p>

<p>Argo.ai, a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based driverless car startup founded by former executives from Google’s and Uber’s autonomous technology divisions, today announced that it’s teaming up with Carnegie Mellon University to form a new center for autonomous vehicle research: the aptly named Carnegie Mellon University Argo AI Center for Autonomous Vehicle Research.</p>
<p>Argo.ai says it’ll pledge $15 million over five years to fund faculty leaders and support graduate students conducting studies in pursuit of their doctorates. Additionally, the company says it’ll provide Carnegie Mellon students engaged in autonomous vehicle research access to data, infrastructure, and platforms like <a href="https://venturebeat.com/2019/06/21/ai-weekly-cvpr-2019-showcased-ai-that-can-visualize-hidden-objects-and-see-around-corners/">Argoverse</a>, a curated corpus of more than 300,000 vehicle trajectories and 290 kilometers of recorded road lanes.</p>

<p>In a blog post, Argo.ai principal scientist and associate professor at Carnegie Mellon Deva Ramanan said that the Center will investigate smart sensor fusion, 3D scene understanding, urban scene simulation, map-based perception, imitation and reinforcement learning, behavioral prediction, and software validation as they relate to driverless vehicle technology. More broadly, it’ll pursue projects to help self-driving cars overcome hurdles like such as winter weather or construction zones, and Ramanan expects its work will “spur engagements” on topics like safety policy and ethics.</p>
<p>“While the team at [Argo.ai] sees a pathway to achieve initial commercialization opportunities for self-driving technology, there are still advancements required to be able to perceive and navigate autonomously in the most complex, open conditions with dramatically lower compute power,” wrote Ramanan, who added that all of the Center’s findings will be reported in open scientific literature. “And until we’re able to do so at scale, the visionary benefits that have been spelled out for society won’t be achieved.”</p>
<p>Ramanan will serve as the Center’s faculty leader along with Simon Lucey, an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute specializing in computer vision. The team’s other founding members include John Dolan, David Held, and Jeff Schneider.</p>
<p>“We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Argo.ai to shape the future of self-driving technologies,” said Carnegie Mellon president Farnam Jahanian. “This investment allows our researchers to continue to lead at the nexus of technology and society, and to solve society’s most pressing problems. Together, Argo.ai and [Carnegie Mellon] will accelerate critical research in autonomous vehicles while building on the momentum of [Carnegie Mellon’s] culture of innovation.”</p>
<p>The Center follows on the heels of Argo.ai’s existing collaboration with Carnegie Mellon and Georgia Tech, but it’s worth noting it’s not the first of its kind. Intel last October announced that it would launch an Institute for Automated Mobility in Arizona, which will combine three state universities; the Departments of Transportation, Public Safety, and Commerce; and companies working on automated cars, trucks, and drones.</p>
<p>Argo has a close relationship with Ford, which in February 2017 said it would invest $1 billion in the startup over the next five years to help it achieve its goal of producing a self-driving vehicle fleet by 2021. This made Ford the company’s largest shareholder and enabled Argo to hire 200 additional employees, many of whom were Ford employees working in the R&amp;D department on a virtual driver system.</p>

<p>But the global management consulting firm predicted in a report that by 2030, a new digital era will emerge. The trajectory of the global regulatory environment for technology as well as the extent to which the Internet remains open or balkanized will determine the contours of this period.</p>
<p>To be positioned for the future digital era, businesses must engage in a strategic digital transformation. A.T. Kearney’s Score framework presents a road map for this process.</p>
<p>A.T. Kearney said there are different possible futures, with fears growing about a new “digital cold war” and the “splinternet,” where the Internet becomes more balkanized. This is forcing companies around the world to shift strategies on everything from procurement to customer engagement.</p>
<p>In a new report by A.T. Kearney’s Global Business Policy Council, Competing in an Age of Digital Disorder, the firm said that companies can no longer be passive observers of the digital revolution.</p>

<p>Instead, they must actively adapt to the present disorder while also preparing for the future digital order by embarking on strategic end-to-end digital transformations.</p>
<p>Much attention is focused on the “techlash” nature of new policies on key  issues such as consumer privacy, data protection, and anti-competitive practices. But many governments are now seeking to strike a balance in policies that both maximize digital’s upsides and mitigate its downsides as they prepare to regulate the digital environment for the first time. Whether those<br />
governments are able to deftly strike such a balance will influence companies’ ability to use digital technologies effectively in the coming years.</p>
<p>“This cycle of innovation, adoption, and then regulation is consistent with  previous waves of technological change,” says Paul Laudicina, chairman of A.T. Kearney’s Global Business Policy Council and co-author of the report, in a statement. “Today, the intense regulatory debate regarding digital technologies is creating a high degree of uncertainty about how the policy environment will evolve.”</p>
<p>After providing a richly researched background on the opportunities and pressure points facing societies, governments, and businesses in this period of digital disorder, the study then offers four scenarios for the digital order that will emerge.</p>

<p>The scenarios are based on two political uncertainties that are unfolding:</p>
<ul>
<li>Regulatory activity. The extent to which governments in key markets around the world impose new regulations on technology companies and the use of digital technologies more broadly</li>
<li>Digital environment. The extent to which the digital economy is a globalized whole, characterized by extensive cross-border digital flows, or an islandized environment, fragmented into different country-level or regional blocs</li>

<p>“These scenarios are designed to be compelling and plausible visions of the future that challenge and test executives’ capacity to anticipate and plan for their companies’ digital strategies in the coming years,” said Erik Peterson, managing director of the Global Business Policy Council and co-author of the study, in a statement. “In fact, some aspects of these scenarios, such as the<br />
emergence of a digital ‘cold war’ between major global powers and early indications of a ‘splinternet,’ are already playing out in various markets around the world.”</p>
<p>Finally, the study argues that companies cannot be simply spectators of the ongoing digital revolution. Instead, executives will need to guide their organizations through strategic digital transformations across a variety of business functions.</p>
<p>“Companies must adapt to the emerging digital order across strategy, customer experience, operations, risk management and compliance, and employees and culture—our Score framework,” said Courtney Rickert McCaffrey, manager of thought leadership for the Global Business Policy Council and co-author of the study, in a statement. “To compete in the 21st-century digital economy, companies must embark on end-to-end digital transformation in all SCORE</p>
