Bengaluru, June 13 (IANS) Amazon India on Sunday announced the launch of ML Summer School which will provide an integrated learning experience for students to gain applied Machine Learning (ML) skills.

A batch of students from select tech campuses in India will be presented with the opportunity to engage through virtual classroom tutorials followed by interactive Q&A sessions with scientists at Amazon.

For students with prior exposure to certain areas of ML, the programme can act as a refresher course, while additionally providing a practical perspective on ML applications in industry, the company said in a statement.

“With the pace of advancements in ML, we are proactively helping students to learn about the latest trends in the field of ML and apply them to solve real-world problems,” said Rajeev Rastogi, VP, India Machine Learning at Amazon.

“Our aim is to prepare students for science roles — this will help to reduce the gap between the growing demand for ML roles across companies and the talent pool with applied ML skills,” he added.

ML Summer School is open to engineering students in their pre-final/final year of Bachelors, Masters or PhD studies across select tech campuses in 2021.

Participants of ML Summer School will be identified through an online assessment.

They will also have access to the Amazon Research Days (ARD) conference where they can learn about technology trends in industry through presentations from renowned ML leaders around the world.

Around 2018,  the government think-tank, National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog emphasized the development of AI research in the IT sectors. This development came on the heels of the launch of a Task Force on Artificial Intelligence for India’s economic transformation by the Commerce and Industry Department of the Government of India in 2017. Since then, AI is gradually being adopted in every sector of India. Experts’ reviews show that healthcare and agriculture are so far among the most important sectors of focus to improve living conditions for India’s citizens.

The government lends a hand

With the government’s inclination towards initialization, more AI initiatives are taking place and a pool of funds are being created for relevant startups. Mayank Kapur, CTO of Indian AI startup Gramener, explained in an interview that the government is still the largest potential customer for data science services in the country. There have been several public sector initiatives encouraging the spread of AI. The government has initiated a proof of concept pilot in 15 districts (counties) in India to use artificial intelligence-based real-time advisory based on satellite imagery, weather data, etc. to increase farm yields where the farm production levels are low. Another long-term project to build a complete natural language processing platform for Indian languages is in operation. This would aid in the development of several applications, like conversational general and career counseling through chatbots and assistants, conversing in 22 Indian languages.

The level of interest in learning about AI and implementing it in the business is gradually growing in India. Industries have started working to skill their manpower to enable themselves to compete with other global players. Educational institutions have started working on their curricula to include courses on machine learning and other relevant areas. Individuals and professionals have started acquiring these skills and are comfortable investing in upgrading their skills.

Aakrit Vaish, CEO of Haptik, Inc. also seems to suggest that in the next 10 years, the understanding of AI and how it works will potentially be more commonplace among most technical industry executives. He thinks that India may go in the direction that China has gone, become their economies. There are probably going to be pockets, Bangalore might be good at deep tech like robotics or research / Hyderabad being good at data/ AI training, Mumbai being good at BFSI and  Delhi for agriculture and government. Like China, most solutions will probably be applied to the local economy.

Komal Talwar from the Government of India’s AI Task Force has stated “We think AI could have a great impact in the health sector. There is a scarcity of good doctors and nurses, with AI the machine can do the first round of diagnostics. Staff can carry machines with them to help cut down on the physical presence needed for doctors.” According to her, the government is encouraging startups to have AI applications that have a social impact (AI in health, AI in education, etc), where startups compete to solve social problems.

United States India Artificial Intelligence, USIAI initiative has been launched to enhance the technological relationships between the two countries.  DST secretary Ashutosh Sharma in the curtain raiser of the event talked about the importance of scaling up the S&T relationship between India and the United States. This would also be helpful in solving problems of both countries and overcoming barriers for growth, he said. 

Sharma also added, “research, technology in artificial intelligence is being promoted and implemented in the country through a network of 25 technology hubs working as a triple helix set up under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS)”. 

US India Artificial Intelligence Initiative: Details

It is an initiative of Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF) and it was established in March 2000. 

The Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, and the U.S. Department of State are respective nodal departments for IUSSTF.

USIAI would focus on AI cooperation in critical areas that are priorities for both US and India. 

US India Artificial Intelligence Initiative: Significance

1. The cooperation will provide an opportunity to discuss the emerging AI landscape, and address the challenges of developing an AI workforce.
2. As per the official statement,” USIAI will serve as a platform to discuss opportunities, challenges, and barriers for bilateral AI research and development collaboration, enable AI innovation, help share ideas for developing an AI workforce, and recommend modes and mechanisms for catalysing partnerships”
3. USIAI would aid AI cooperation in critical areas like healthcare, smart cities, materials, agriculture, energy, and manufacturing which are useful for both the countries. 

India is already prepared:

1. India has recently launched National AI strategy through NITI Ayog and National AI Portal (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology). 
2. It has also spread AI in various sectors like education, healthcare, agriculture and commerce etc. 
3. Also MyGov Corona Helpdesk Chatbot was the winner at CogX 2020 under two categories: Best Innovation for Covid-19 – Society and People’s Choice Covid-19 Overall Winner.
4. India is also a member of Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI).
5. India reported a 45% increase in the use of Artificial Intelligence, the highest among all countries
6. Responsible AI for Social Empowerment 2020 (RAISE 2020) was jointly organised by the NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY)
