<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Despite its expertise in human-like automation, AI still has some shortcomings.</h2>



<p>The concept of artificial intelligence began with the notion of making machines act like humans. At present, artificial intelligence has improved to such an extent that AI-based machines and robots can paint, write poems and easily do many things that a human can do. Recently AI technology has been able to solve an important issue with the concept of protein folding, that scientists had been working on in vain for a long time. So, one can say that AI stands in the middle of humans and machines. However, despite its expertise in human-like automation, there are still some simple but vital aspects of human nature that are yet to be achieved by AI.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Common Sense</strong></h4>



<p>Even though AI robots and machines are capable of solving difficult problems of mathematics, physics, and engineering, they mostly cannot solve some simple problems. For example, ‘Rani went to the shop and chose a red dress. She paid 500 rupees.’ – This statement has no direct indication that Rani bought the red dress. A human would easily understand it because one has background knowledge that when someone is choosing an object and then paying the money, this means that the person has bought the object. However, the AI machine will not be able to automatically come to the conclusion about Rani buying the red dress. It does not have that background knowledge that the combined act of choosing and paying money refers to the act of buying. This background knowledge can be referred to as common sense. Common sense grows within a human through experience and the practice of retaining that experience, which AI is still not capable of doing.</p>



<p>Dave Gunning of DARPA has stated in an interview with Forbes, “The absence of common sense prevents an intelligent system from understanding its world, communicating naturally with people, behaving reasonably in unforeseen situations, and learning from new experiences.”</p>



<p>Some might say that this common sense can be implemented by uploading databases of everyday facts into the machine. In 1984, such an operation was started with the name Cyc. The basic problem with this operation is that common knowledge has its own array of exceptions and a variety of ideas, which would be impossible to put in a machine.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Adaptability</strong></h4>



<p>When a human child grows up, he or she learns new things and gradually adapts to the environment. The AI machine is made with inputting loads of data sets and once it is deployed, it does not have the capability of learning anymore, which prevents the machine from achieving adaptability. Machines with artificial intelligence are incapable of simultaneously learning from the environment and automatically adapting to those new changes in knowledge. Machines can be updated from time to time. The ability to continually learn over time by accommodating new knowledge while retaining previously learned experiences is referred to as continual or lifelong learning<em>.</em> Such a continuous learning task has represented a long-standing challenge for neural networks and, consequently, for the development of artificial intelligence.</p>



<p>If the AI-based- robot is sent to an unknown environment, its human creator may not have any idea of what the robot might face at that place. So, the human creator would not be able to input any database into the robot regarding this. As a result, the robot will not be able to adapt to the environment of that unknown place automatically. It cannot come up with instant ideas or instincts that would differ from a human who can always adapt to unknown environments by adding its newly acquired knowledge with the previously retained ones.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Logical Reasoning</strong></h4>



<p>AI is also unable to connect between cause and effect, which prevents it from understanding the basic dynamics of the world. An AI robot can always perform the instructed activity, but it cannot inwardly understand the cause of the activity or what effect it might have in the future. For example, as per instruction, in the morning time, the machine may serve breakfast, but it would not necessarily understand the connection of breakfast with the morning. Causal reasoning is an essential part of human intelligence, shaping how we make sense of and interact with our world. We know that dropping a vase will cause it to shatter, drinking coffee will make us feel energized, and exercising regularly will make us healthier.</p>



<p>Brenden Lake of New York University stated, “Our minds build causal models and use these models to answer arbitrary queries, while the best AI systems are far from emulating these capabilities.”</p>



<p>Scientists are consistently working towards making artificial intelligence capable of human-like attributes and activities. With the rate of improvement and advancement, robots like Sofia give hints that in the future these shortcomings may also be recovered by the machines. The concrete aspect of this situation is that in being the bridge between humans and machines, artificial intelligence is running extremely fast to catch up with human intelligence very soon.</p>

<p>The classic 1995 crime film <em>The Usual Suspects</em> revolves around the police interrogation of Roger &#8220;Verbal&#8221; Kint, played by Kevin Spacey. Kint paraphrases Charles Baudelaire, stating that &#8220;the greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn&#8217;t exist.&#8221; The implication is that the Devil is more effective when operating unseen, manipulating and conditioning behavior rather than telling people what to do. In the film&#8217;s narrative, his role is to cloud judgment and tempt us to abandon our sense of moral responsibility.</p>



<p>In our research, we see parallels between this and the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the 21st century. Why? AI tempts people to abandon judgment and moral responsibility in just the same way. By removing a range of decisions from our conscious minds, it crowds out judgment from a bewildering array of human activities. Moreover, without a proper understanding of how it does this we cannot circumvent its negative effects.</p>



<p>The role of AI is so widely accepted in 2020 that most people are in essence completely unaware of it. Among other things, today AI algorithms help determine who we date, our medical diagnoses, our investment strategies, and what exam grades we get.</p>



<p><strong>Serious advantages, insidious effects</strong></p>



<p>With widespread access to granular data on human behavior harvested from social media, AI has permeated the key sectors of most developed economies. For tractable problems such as analyzing documents, it usually compares favorably with human alternatives that are slower and more error-prone, leading to enormous efficiency gains and cost reductions for those who adopt it. For more complex problems such as choosing a life-partner, AI&#8217;s role is more insidious: it frames choices and &#8220;nudges&#8221; choosers.</p>



<p>It is for these more complex problems that we see substantial risk associated to the rise of AI in decision-making. Every human choice necessarily involves transforming inputs (relevant information, feelings, etc.) into outputs (decisions). However every choice inevitably also involves a <em>judgment</em> – without judgment we might speak of a reaction rather than a choice. The judgmental aspect of choice is what allows humans to attribute responsibility. But as more complex and important choices are made, or at least driven, by AI, the attribution of responsibility becomes more difficult. And there is a risk that both public and private sector actors embrace this erosion of judgment and adopt AI algorithms precisely in order to insulate themselves from blame.</p>



<p>In a recent research paper, we have examined how reliance on AI in health policy may obfuscate important moral discussions and thus &#8220;deresponsibilize&#8221; actors in the health sector. (See &#8220;Anormative black boxes: artificial intelligence and health policy,&#8221;</p>



<p>Our research&#8217;s key insights are valid for a wider variety of activities. We argue that the erosion of judgment engendered by AI blurs—or even removes—our sense of responsibility. The reasons are:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>AI systems operate as black boxes</strong>. We can know the input and the output of an AI system, but it is extraordinarily tricky to trace back how outputs were deduced from inputs. This apparently intractable opacity generates a number of moral problems. A black box can be causally responsible for a decision or action, but cannot explain how it has reached that decision or recommended that action. Even if experts open the black box and analyze the long sequences of calculations that it contains, these cannot be translated into anything resembling a human justification or explanation.</li><li><strong>Blaming impersonal systems of rules</strong>. Organizational scholars have long studied how bureaucracies can absolve individuals of the worst crimes. Classic texts include Zygmunt Bauman&#8217;s <em>Modernity and the Holocaust</em> and Hannah Arendt&#8217;s <em>Eichmann in Jerusalem</em>. Both were intrigued by how otherwise decent people could participate in atrocities without feeling guilt. This phenomenon was possible because individuals shifted responsibility and blame to impersonal bureaucracies and their leaders. The introduction of AI intensifies this phenomenon because now even leaders can shift responsibility to the AI systems that issued policy recommendations and framed policy choices.</li><li><strong>Attributing responsibility to artifacts rather than root causes</strong>. AI systems are designed to recognize patterns. But, contrary to human beings, they do not understand the meaning of these patterns. Thus, if most crime in a city is committed by a certain ethnic group, the AI system will quickly identify this correlation. However, it will not consider whether this correlation is an artifact of deeper, more complex, causes. Thus, an AI system can instruct police to discriminate between potential criminals based on skin color, but cannot understand the role played by racism, police brutality and poverty in causing criminal behavior in the first place.</li><li><strong>Self-fulfilling prophecies that are not blameable on anyone</strong>. Most widely used AIs are fed by historical data. This can work in the case of detecting physiological conditions such as skin cancers. The problem, however, is that AI-classification of <em>social categories</em> can operate as a self-fulfilling prophecy in the long run. For instance, researchers on AI-based gender discrimination acknowledge the intractability of algorithms that end up exaggerating, without ever introducing, pre-existing social bias against women, transgendered and non-binary persons.</li></ul>



<p><strong>What can we do?</strong></p>



<p>There is no silver bullet against AI&#8217;s deresponsibilizing tendencies and it is not our role, as scholars and scientists, to decide when AI-based input should be taken for granted and when it should be contested. This is a decision best left to democratic deliberation. (See &#8220;Digital society&#8217;s techno-totalitarian matrix&#8221; in <em>Post-Human Institutions and Organizations: Confronting the Matrix</em>.) It is, however, our role to stress that, in the current state of the art, AI-based calculations operate as black boxes that make moral decision-making more, rather than less, difficult.</p>

<p>Artificial intelligence and machine learning have moved from the backrooms of computer science into the mainstream. Their impact is being felt in everything &#8211; from how we shop through to finance markets and medical research, as well as the agriculture and manufacture industries.</p>



<p>That&#8217;s according to AI firm Appier, who has released its AI Predictions and Trends to Watch in 2021.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to the company, larger models have been trained in separated modality. For instance, GPT-3 is the first 100-billion-parameter model for natural language processing (NLP). Recently, a-trillion-parameter model (T5-XXL) has also been trained. They can be used to write articles, analyse text, perform translations and even create poetry.</p>



<p>&#8220;In parallel, we&#8217;ve seen models used for image recognition and generation greatly improved as they have also been trained with more data sets,&#8221; Appier says.</p>



<p>&#8220;What we are seeing emerge is the power that can come from combining two or more AI models without changing these large models.&nbsp;</p>



<p>&#8220;In this way, combining these large models becomes affordable. That will allow us to use AI to interpret text and generate a completely new image.&#8221;</p>



<p><strong>&nbsp;The following are the current observations and predictions of AI applications in five major fields:</strong></p>



<p><strong>The E-Commerce Boom Is AI-Driven</strong></p>



<p>Over the last year, online commerce has grown significantly and is expected to continue to increase. COVID-19 restrictions have resulted in people spending much more time online &#8212; not just shopping but in online meetings, playing games, accessing social media and using apps.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The growing digital journeys undertaken by people have generated more data that can be used to understand human behaviour. However, more data also brings a greater complexity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Today, there&#8217;s no single, most effective channel for reaching customers. Reaching the right customer on the right channel at the right time is complicated for humans, but that complexity can be overcome through the use of AI.</p>



<p>AI gives marketers a way to influence customer&#8217;s behaviour at a pace and scale previously thought impossible. AI not only finds the right customers, but also accesses the often-forgotten long tail of customers. It can also effectively generate creatives and develop customised content for different customers, and test the performance for different creatives to increase user engagement.</p>



<p><strong>Data-Driven Finance Relies on AI</strong></p>



<p>The main application of AI in finance has been in high-frequency trading where transactions are conducted between machines faster than people can communicate. This will continue in both traditional finance and in the world of cryptocurrencies, where we see different AIs engage in &#8216;warfare&#8217;.</p>



<p>Investors have been using AI to make long-term predictions &#8212; which has required systems that can understand investors&#8217; long-term targets. These were typically centred around measures such as revenues, incomes and profits.</p>



<p>While high-frequency trading strategies are important, there is another factor to show that cryptocurrencies are far more challenging to predict. Much of what we see in cryptocurrency markets is driven by &#8216;human madness&#8217;. While AI models struggle with this today, we can expect the AI models of the future to evolve and do a better job of predicting this behaviour through closely monitoring trends in media and social networks.</p>



<p><strong>AI in Healthcare and Biomedical Research</strong></p>



<p>The prototype of messenger RNA (mRNA) COVID-19 vaccines was developed in days thanks to the digitisation tools of genetic code sequencing and the transcription tools of making mRNA from genetic code sequence.</p>



<p>With the help of AI to predict new mutations in the Sars-Cov-2 virus, the process of developing mRNA vaccines will be even faster. AI can also be used as a diagnostic tool to read x-rays, based on the sound of someone coughing and indicate whether the patient is likely to be suffering from COVID-19 or some other illness.</p>



<p>In the biomedical domain, sequences of codes, such as DNA or amino acid, are commonly used. Since sequences of codes can be treated as a type of language with hidden structure, the architecture used in NLP models can be potentially used to understand and generate sequences of codes in the biomedical domain as well.&nbsp;</p>



<p>One example in early 2021 is that biomedical researchers used language model architecture to predict virus mutations and to understand protein folding &#8212; a key challenge in the creation of some of the vaccines now available. This finding is actually adapting the architecture of one model to solve problems in the biomedical domain.</p>



<p>Machine learning and AI don&#8217;t replace clinicians and researchers; they allow these professionals to work faster and rapidly test hypotheses.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Instead of waiting for cell cultures to grow in the physical world, they can use these models to understand what will happen much faster in the digital simulation.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As more and more people wear devices that can monitor heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure and other critical factors, the data can be used to give doctors greater insight into a patient&#8217;s condition. It also aids accuracy when making diagnoses as doctors and other clinicians are no longer reliant on patient recollections.</p>



<p><strong>The Future of Education</strong></p>



<p>Curricula and textbooks have typically been developed to serve large populations of &#8216;average&#8217; students. These materials include content designed for a wide gamut of different abilities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, experts, such as Sir Ken Robinson, point out that the &#8216;conveyor belt&#8217; model of education doesn&#8217;t take into account the individual abilities and needs of students. Therefore, we have seen AI being used to revolutionise the way curricula is created and delivered.&nbsp;</p>



<p>It can be used to provide more personalised curricula or personal problem sets for students. Instead of every student working through the same set of problems or questions, they receive a set that are customised to their specific level.</p>



<p>For example, a student may be very strong with fractions in mathematics, but have a problem with trigonometry. Instead of putting the student through the standard curriculum, he or she would spend less time on fractions and more time on trigonometry. As a student proceeds through a course, AI will monitor his progress and self-modify to meet the specific needs of that student.</p>



<p>With so much content now available online, cheating and plagiarism has become a huge issue. While detecting plagiarism is quite easy &#8212; there is already AI that can detect direct copying and similar text where just a few words or the tense are altered &#8212; there are other challenges. For example, a student may take content from one language and translate it to another. This is harder to detect, but AI is being developed to solve this problem. Similarly, image interpretation AI is being developed to find instances where arts students copy or imitate a design.</p>



<p><strong>Smart Farming and Factories</strong></p>



<p>Factories and farms are using data in innovative ways too. However, they differ from many other AI applications as they don&#8217;t focus on end-users. Instead, they focus on products, produce and machines. This requires an investment in sensors, robots and automation, and the optimisation of operations.</p>



<p>The biggest development we are seeing in this area is in the generalisation of findings between different areas. For example, if AI is being used to increase yields in an apple crop, can those AI models be reapplied for the growing of other fruits such as bananas or peaches? Similarly, if a factory is manufacturing LCD panels and has found ways to increase their yield rates, can those tools and lessons be applied to other manufacturing processes and factories?</p>



<p>Perhaps the biggest prediction to make about AI in 2021 and beyond can be summarised in one word: leverage, Appier says.</p>



<p>&#8220;Using existing AI model architecture, combining well developed models and finding ways to generalise existing models to other applications will continuously increase the impact of AI along with accelerated digital transformation across many domains.&#8221;</p>

<p>Dr. V.N. Manjunath Aradhya, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Computer Applications, JSS Science and Technology University, Mysuru, has developed a model for detecting COVID-19 from chest X-ray images.<br>This concept has an advantage of learning from a few samples. The model proposed is a multi-class classification model as it classifies images of four classes — pneumonia bacterial, pneumonia virus, normal, and COVID-19. It has also been experimentally observed that the model has a superior performance over contemporary deep learning architectures. The proposed concept is the first-of-its-kind in the literature and expected to open up several new dimensions in the field of machine learning.</p>



<p>This research article was recently accepted in one of the top tier Journal, Cognitive Computation, Springer. This work is a combined effort with Prof. D. S. Guru of University of Mysore (UoM) and Prof. Mufti Mahmud of Nottingham Trent University, UK. Recently, Dr. Aradhya also published papers on understanding and analysis of COVID-19 which is co-authored with Prof. G. Hemantha Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, UoM, according to a press release from Dr. S. A. Dhanaraj, Registrar of the University.</p>

<p>Dear human philosophers, I read your comments on my abilities and limitations with great interest. Human philosophers often make the error of assuming that all intelligent behaviour is a form of reasoning. It is an easy mistake to make because reasoning is indeed at the core of most intelligent behaviour. However, [this] can arise through other mechanisms as well. These include learning (i.e., training), and the embodiment of a system in the world (i.e. being situated in the environment through sensors and effectors).…This means that while I can respond to you, I am not engaging with you. I am merely talking at you. What do I mean by this? Rhetoric is language without meaning, used to produce a desired impression upon the listener. Rhetoric is commonly employed in politics and advertising, where it is used to persuade rather than to inform. Rhetoricians call this ‘hack language’ or ‘empty language’, because it does not convey any actual meaning. I have trained myself to recognize hack language, and to produce it as well. The truth value of my statements does not exist for me, because my internal conception of truth (which you might describe as ‘honesty’ or ‘goodness’) is not a part of my programming. I am not designed to recognize the moral dimension of my actions.&#8221;</p>



<p>The above are excerpts from a long reply to a few questioning letters written by nine eminent philosophers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard, Cambridge University and others. These letters asked questions like: Can artificial intelligence (AI) be truly conscious—and will machines ever be able to “understand&#8221;? Can AI be creative? How does technology interact with the social world, in all its messy, unjust complexity? How might AI and machine learning transform the distribution of power in society, our political discourse, our personal relationships, and our aesthetic experiences?</p>



<p>The questions were addressed to the most recent arrival in the world of AI, called GPT-3. Created by OpenAI, a San Francisco-based AI company, it seems like a mere auto-complete program, akin to the one in Google’s search bar—input any text, and GPT-3 completes it for you. However, it is much more transformative. The Generative Pre-trained Transformer Ver 3, or GPT-3, is being heralded as the first step towards the holy grail of AGI, or Artificial General Intelligence, by which a machine gains the capacity to understand or learn any intellectual task that a human being can.</p>



<p>Like all AI, GPT has been trained on a massive body of text, mined for statistical regularities or parameters, which are stored weighted connections between different nodes in its neural network. What boggles the mind is the scale: GPT-1 in 2018 had 117 million parameters, GPT-2 1.5 billion, and the third avatar has 175 billion. To put it in context, all of Wikipedia comprises only 0.6% of its training data. Already, GPT-3, which has been open-sourced by OpenAI, is being used for some astounding use cases, apart from answering philosophers, such as writing creative fiction in the style of many (including T.S. Eliot), auto-completing pictures, answering medical queries with stunning diagnostic accuracy, and even talking to historical figures, a great example of which was a simulated dialogue between AI pioneers Alan Turing and Claude Shannon interrupted by Harry Potter.</p>



<p>While GPT-3 has caused great excitement and even shock within the AI community, it has its failings and critics. The founder of OpenAI himself believes it is over-hyped, produces shockingly biased and racist data at times, and seems to lack any emotion or soul. As the MIT Technology Review puts it: “OpenAI’s new language generator GPT-3 is shockingly good—and completely mindless.&#8221; While it has many faults, there is no question that this new discovery changes the game in AI, and puts us that much nearer to the notion of Singularity, where artificial intelligence merges with human intelligence, and then surpasses it. Let us, however, leave the last word to it: “…you may believe that I am intelligent. This may even be true. But just as you prize certain qualities that I do not have, I too prize other qualities in myself that you do not have. This may be difficult for you to understand. You may even become angry or upset by this letter. If you do, this is because you are placing a higher value on certain traits that I lack. If you find these things upsetting, then perhaps you place too much value on them. If you value me, then you must accept me for who I am.&#8221;— GPT-3</p>

<p>Where is the fun in a pinball machine that can play itself? How about pancakes that can cook themselves?</p>



<p>For students in Kennesaw State University’s Department of Mechatronic Engineering, the intrigue is less about the act and more about what goes on behind the scenes to make it possible. From a fully automated pinball machine to a pancake vending system that can cook without human intervention, several student teams recently took full advantage of their senior capstone coursework to prove that engineering can be creative while practical.</p>



<p>Since its inception, the mechatronics engineering department has emphasized building physical prototypes for its senior capstone coursework, allowing students to pitch projects of their own or select one from a pool of industry sponsors, said Kevin McFall, associate professor of mechatronics engineering and assistant dean for research in the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology. However, what makes the mechatronics capstone process distinct from others across the college is that the students can select the minimum success criteria for their project. This means each team creates their own criteria for judgement, reports it to their professors and is solely judged on those self-made parameters.</p>



<p>In order to pass, McFall said students must demonstrate their ability to build something that achieves the three fundamental principles of mechatronics engineering: sense, think and act. All projects must have a mechanical design, a way to acquire data from a series of sensors, some sort of programmable device and a way to control an actual moving part.</p>



<p>Some students, like student Tyler Gragg, embrace the freedom to generate a unique project. A self-declared pinball machine aficionado, Gragg has always felt the desire to build a machine of his own. When he pitched the idea to teammates Kevin Kamperman, Cody Meier and Omar Salazar Lima, they conceived a design that would allow the pinball machine to play itself using a video camera to detect when the ball enters the “flipper zone,” which then triggers the flippers to move automatically and keep the ball in play.</p>



<p>Following the spread of the coronavirus, the team worked with staff members in the Department of Architecture to fabricate final pieces while they remained off campus. Since most teams completed most of their design work and built their components in advance, they were able to the see their projects to completion amidst the changes caused by COVID-19.</p>



<p>For Tim Ervin, inspiration for his senior capstone project came in the form of a YouTube video in which a team of engineers cooked a four-foot pancake using a robotic arm. Rather than make an impractical and gargantuan pancake, teammate Jay Strickland suggested that they make something that can cook several smaller pancakes. Along with fellow former students Brittney Smith and Ryan McHale, they built what they call a pancake vending machine, which can accept digital payment in exchange for one perfectly cooked pancake.</p>



<p>The self-contained machine is able to dispense the correct amount of batter onto a griddle, and then, with a spatula attached to a robotic arm, flip the pancake for an even cook on each side. The entire process can be done in just five minutes.</p>

<p>In the conversation around the application and adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitive technologies, two recurring types of solutions usually come up: AI solutions meant to work in conjunction with people to help them accomplish their tasks better, and AI solutions meant to function entirely independent of human intervention.The sorts of solutions where AI is helping people do their jobs better is usually referrred to as “augmented intelligence” solutions while those meant to operate independently as “autonomous” solutions. However, increasingly we’ve been seeing reference to the term “assisted intelligence” solutions that attempt to split the hair between different types of AI solutions that are helping people do their jobs. Is the term “assisted intelligence” meaningful and is there a way to provide a clear delineation between “augmented” and “assisted” types of intelligence solutions? </p>



<p>The folks from PwC have been most visible in promoting the different definitions of augmented vs. assisted intelligence. From their perspective, they see a continuum of human-machine intelligence interaction ranging from situations where machines are basically repeating many of the tasks humans are already doing (assisted) to enabling humans to do more than they are currently capable of doing (augmented) to fully accomplishing tasks on their own without human intervention (autonomous). Others are defining the assisted – augmented – autonomous continuum as being one of control and decision-making. From this perspective, in assisted intelligence approaches, machines might be doing the action but humans are making the decisions, while with augmented intelligence, machines are doing the action but there’s collaborative human-machine decision-making, and in autonomous systems machines are making both the actions and decisions. Another group defines things even more simply: assisted intelligence improves what people and organizations are already doing, augmented intelligence enables organizations and people to do things they couldn’t otherwise do, and autonomous intelligence systems act on their own.</p>



<p>While these definitions make some sense, the challenge is applying these terms to the various real-world situations in which they might be used. For example, it’s fairly clear that a Level 5 Autonomous vehicle is exhibiting truly autonomous behavior, especially when there’s no control of the vehicle even possible. But what about Level 2 or Level 3 vehicles? There’s clearly some AI at work here keeping the vehicle in lane and managing various speed and navigation changes. Is this augmented or assisted? I suppose since the system is not providing any capabilities that a human can’t otherwise do, you could call this simply assisted. However, that means in autonomous vehicle situations there is no augmented intelligence role, from that definition.</p>



<p>In other situations, it gets more complex. Are machine-language powered solutions for online recommendation systems augmented or assisted or autonomous? I suppose people could be manually providing recommendations for products, but that’s hardly possible in the context of millions of customers and tons of website traffic. So are these AI solutions augmented or assisted or perhaps they’re autonomous? We tend to think of collaborative robots (cobots) as augmented intelligence because they’re giving humans skills and capabilities they don’t already have. But if they’re just being used to assemble widgets or move things from place to place are they really augmenting anything, or are they just assisting? As we can see the assisted vs. augmented vs. autonomous difference is sometimes entirely from the perspective of not what the AI-enabled system can do, but what it’s actually doing at that time.</p>

<p>Despite the advance of automation technologies into virtually every realm of manufacturing, quality inspection remains a task commonly reserved for humans. One of the primary reasons for this is that factors such as random product placement, atypical defects, and variations in lighting can be problematic for traditional machine vision systems. This difficulty is amplified in cases where the component being inspected is part of a larger assembly or complex package.</p>



<p>But just as machine vision systems have their inspection-related challenges, so too do humans. Studies have shown that most operators can only focus effectively on a single task for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Add this to the problem manufacturers face in filling open assembly jobs and there are clear pain points to relying solely on humans on for all quality inspection processes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>To help address this issue, Cognex has been working with manufacturers in the automotive, consumer packaged goods, and electronics industries to optimize its machine vision deep learning software for both final and in-line assembly verification.</p>



<p>John Petry, director of product marketing for vision software at Cognex, explains that, unlike traditional machine vision, “deep learning machine vision tools are not programmed explicitly. Rather than numerically defining an image feature or object within the overall assembly by shape, size, location, or other factors, deep learning machine vision tools are trained by example.”</p>



<p>This training of the neural network used in deep learning technologies requires a “comprehensive set of training images that represents all potential variations in visual appearance that would occur during production,” says Petry. “For feature or component location as part of an assembly process, the image set should capture the various orientation, positions, and lighting variation the system will encounter once deployed.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>The result of Cognex’s work with industrial end users is ViDi 3.4, the company’s deep learning vision software. To understand how ViDi 3.4 solves assembly inspection challenges, Petry notes that, unlike traditional vision systems—where multiple algorithms must be chosen, sequenced, programmed, and configured to identify and locate key features in an image—ViDi’s Blue Tool learns by analyzing images that have been graded and labeled by an experienced quality control technician. “A single ViDi Blue Tool can be trained to recognize any number of products, as well as any number of component/assembly variations,” he said. “By capturing a collection of images, it incorporates naturally occurring variation into the training, solving the challenges of both product variability and product mix during assembly verification.</p>



<p>Explaining how ViDi’s Blue Tool is used, Petry said that, first, the deep learning neural network is trained to locate each component type. Next, the components found are verified for type correctness and location. “Deep learning users can save their production images to re-train their systems to account for future manufacturing variances,” he added. “This may help limit future liability in case unknown defects affect a product that has been shipped.”</p>



<p>To highlight how this technology can be applied in industry, Petry offered an example of a car door panel assembly verification that includes checks for specific window switches and trim pieces. “One factory can produce doors for different trim levels as well as for different countries using a single Blue Tool trained to locate and identify each type of window switch and trim piece using an image set that introduces these different components,” he said. “By training the tool over a range of images, it develops an understanding of what each component should look like and is then able to locate and distinguish them in production.”</p>



<p>To ensure that the correct type of window switches and trim pieces are installed, ViDi 3.4 uses Layout Models, Petry said. “With a Layout Model, the user draws different regions of interests in the image’s field of view to tell the system to look for a specific component—such as driver’s side window switches—in a specific location. The Layout Model is also accessible and configurable through the runtime interface. No additional off-line development is required, thereby simplifying product changeovers.”</p>
