Source – https://www.analyticsinsight.net/

AI, or artificial intelligence, has become huge in recent years and has affected many aspects of our society. We’ve seen it in our restaurants, our hospitals, and even our schools. AI is even impacting the latest casino bonuses. Since many people like to gamble online, online casinos have implemented AI to help you beat probabilities and earn you more bonuses. However, you sometimes have to wonder whether AI is affecting your life as well. Can AI affect how people live their lives? In fact, can AI affect everything in our society?

AI in Restaurants

We all need food to survive, and what better way to eat food than in a restaurant with our closest friends and family? In the past, a friendly cashier would ask what you would like to order via the front desk or the drive-thru. Nowadays, many restaurants like McDonald’s have got kiosks to place your order- no human interaction necessary. Humans are known to make mistakes, and mistakes can take a long time to resolve.

AI Kiosks in Restaurants

That’s why, along with the rapid development of technology, restaurants are implementing AI kiosks for customers to customize their orders. Some customers see this change as an improvement over announcing their orders to an underpaid cashier. Employers see this change as a way to save money in the long run. Others, however, do not trust these kiosks. What happens if the AI makes a mistake on their order or when other noises disrupt the AI? Humans create AI, after all, and humans do make mistakes. Whatever is the case, restaurants are dead set on implementing AIs into their buildings.

AI in Hospitals

Hospitals have been more important now than ever, which means employees there are working harder. This means AI can make doctors’ and nurses’ work easier. Healthcare, much like technology, is a part of science, so it makes sense for these two industries to work together. For example, many hospitals use AI to pinpoint treatment for cancer patients and to help doctors collect store, and access data. Both of these points make treating and serving patients better and easier. AI has also helped healthcare employees maintain records and save them money. For those reasons, a good majority of healthcare workers welcome these changes into their hospitals.

AI in Schools

Children are seen as our future, and school is usually the first place they go to. Children also have an easier time adapting to advancing technology. Naturally, it’s no secret that AI technology is going to infiltrate our schools. Pupils are already using computers in the classrooms, so how is AI going to change much for them? While this technology can help students learn more, there are also more things AI offers.

AI for Mental Health?

One academy chain in England is using AI to detect the mental health of pupils. Private schools such as Repton and St Paul’s are tracking their pupils’ mental health to predict self-harm, drug abuse, and eating disorders. How this works is that pupils take a psychological test called AS Tracking and are asked questions such as ‘How easy is it for somebody to come into your space?’. Some teachers find this preferable over having pupils talking about their problems. Teenagers are private people, so AIs have a great impact in letting them release their emotions and frustrations.

Conclusion

It’s no secret that AI has affected many parts of our society, and there’s no going back to the past. However, can AI impact everything in our society? We think it might. It’s affecting our society right now, so who knows how much more it can affect? That’s how technology works.

In the past decade, artificial intelligence (AI) has made it to mainstream society from academic journals. The technology has achieved numerous milestones when it comes to digital transformation across society including businesses, education, and healthcare as well. Today people can do the tasks which were not even possible ten years back.

The proportion of organizations using AI in some form rose from 10 percent in 2016 to 37 percent in 2019 and that figure is extremely likely to rise further in the coming year, according to Gartner’s 2019 CIO Agenda survey.

While the breakthroughs in surpassing human ability at human pursuits, such as chess, make headlines, AI has been a standard part of the industrial repertoire since at least the 1980s. Then production-rule or “expert” systems became a standard technology for checking circuit boards and detecting credit card fraud. Similarly, machine-learning (ML) strategies like genetic algorithms have long been used for intractable computational problems, such as scheduling, and neural networks not only to model and understand human learning but also for basic industrial control and monitoring.

Moreover, AI is also the core of some of the most successful companies in history in terms of market capitalization—Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon. Along with information and communication technology (ICT) more generally, the technology has revolutionized the ease with which people from all over the world can access knowledge, credit, and other benefits of a contemporary global society. Such access has helped lead to a massive reduction of global inequality and extreme poverty, for example by allowing farmers to know fair prices, the best crops, and giving them access to accurate weather predictions.

Future Impact of AI on Businesses

Following the trends, we can say that there will be big winners and losers as collaborative technologies, robots and artificial intelligence transform the nature of work. Moreover, data expertise will become exponentially more important. Across various organizations, the role of a senior manager in a deeply data-driven world is about to shift, thanks to the AI revolution. It is estimated that information hoarders will slow the pace of their organizations and forsake the power of artificial intelligence while competitors exploit it.

In the future, judgments about consumers and potential consumers will be made instantaneously and many organizations will put cybersecurity on par with other intelligence and defense priorities. Besides, open-source information and artificial intelligence collection will provide opportunities for global technological parity and soon predictive analytics and artificial intelligence could play an even more fundamental role in content creation.

Future Impact of AI of Society

With the growth of AI-enabled technologies in the future, societies will face challenges in realizing technologies that benefit humanity instead of destroying and intruding on the human rights of privacy and freedom of access to information. Also, the surging capabilities of robots and artificial intelligence will see a range of current jobs supplanted, where professional roles such as doctors, lawyers, and accountants could be replaced by artificial intelligence by the year 2025.

Moreover, low-skill workers will reallocate to tasks that are non-susceptible to computerization. All the risks will arise out of human activity from certain technological development in this technology, synthetic biology, nano techno, and artificial intelligence.

Human intelligence will be the key to preparing for ‘age of artificial intelligence’ in Aotearoa

What could the growing use of artificial intelligence mean for Aotearoa and how can we ensure that all New Zealanders can prosper in an AI world?

These are questions Royal Society Te Apārangi introduces in a new summary report The Age of Artificial Intelligence in Aotearoa.

The Society urges New Zealanders to reflect on what AI-enabled future the nation wants, as the future impact of artificial intelligence on our society will be ultimately determined by decisions taken today.

The report outlines what artificial intelligence is, how it is or could be used in Aotearoa New Zealand, and the risks that need to be managed to ensure all can benefit.

It has come out of a project led by the Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) that New Zealand has contributed to, called ‘The Effective and Ethical Development of Artificial Intelligence: An Opportunity to Improve Our Wellbeing’.

Artificial Intelligence is a term for a collection of computer methods and techniques that would require human thought if performed by us. This includes applications like speech and image recognition and automated reasoning.

It is already being used in New Zealand in many sectors but its use is expected to rise steadily, driven by advances in data storage, computer processing power and connectivity.

Professor James Maclaurin, Co-director of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Public Policy at the University of Otago, who is an author on the ACOLA report, says there has been a lot of disagreement about how much artificial intelligence will disrupt the workforce by replacing workers.

“In reality we don’t know and likely cannot usefully predict how many jobs there will be in 20 years’ time and what those jobs will look like. It’s important that we don’t conflate the number of jobs that disappear with the number of people unemployed, because, as with any new technology, many new roles will be created. Some of these new jobs will be high pay, high value and others will be low paid, low value, resulting in under-employment. It’s fair to say that few jobs will be unaffected. We will need safety nets and AI-aware labour laws. But there is genuine excitement that human cooperation with intelligent machines may define the next era of our history and could bring many benefits to society.”

The report outlines a number of sectors where artificial intelligence is already being applied in New Zealand.

One area where New Zealand is world-leading is in our use of AI in the government sector, with most government agencies using AI, as noted in the government’s recent Algorithm Assessment Report, Professor Maclaurin said.

The report highlights other uses which include an application to predict vineyard harvests, an AI tutor for high school students and the introduction of automated assistants in the banking sector.

Applications under development include those for better health diagnoses, smarter management of resources such as water and fertilizer on farms or in the energy sector, faster identification of biosecurity threats or tracking of endangered species.

In our personal lives, we could benefit from driverless cars, digital assistants for travel booking and language translation and one-on-one tech support or tutoring.

“AI is good for processing information faster in order to select and weigh options more efficiently or to identify connections that were not obvious before, but we need to make sure that we ask the right questions and provide the right data so as to avoid bias,” Professor Maclaurin said.

“Ideally people would have confidence to make well-informed decisions about when to share their data and, when they do share data, they should know that it will be handled securely and used to make decisions fairly without discriminating against them or others.

“Also, it is important that artificial intelligence can benefit everyone, not just a small number of companies or a small proportion of New Zealand’s population.

“As a country New Zealand must ensure safe and just use of artificial intelligence. We can show international leadership, developing a mix of regulation, education, new business practices, even new institutions.

“At the moment, almost all of New Zealand’s focus is on research into the development of AI, rather than on research into its impacts. That has to change.

“The decisions we make now will determine our future, which is where human intelligence comes in. We have the opportunity to set a global example for responsible adoption of AI. With proper oversight, AI has the potential to enhance wellbeing and provide a range of benefits to all New Zealanders.”
